Like many others Nicola and I were saddened to hear that our mate Ian Bowater (Bowie) passed away last night after a long battle with illness. Ian was totally devoted to speedway and shared his love for the sport through his award winning Doing it In The Dirt radio show. He will be missed by many. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Gaylene and Nirvana-Lea and all Ians family and friends. Rest in peace mate.

I never met Ian in person, but have spoken Speedway with him through his radio show. His passion was obvious to all. RIP Ian.

Update from the Doing It In The Dirt Facebook page regarding Bowie's funeral arrangements.
"Hey race fans, Nirvana-lea here, Bowie's funeral will be this thursday at 1pm at barber hall on waldegrave street. He will be in a white casket so feel free to bring your racing stickers to put on it. There will also be vivids available so you can write a note or draw a picture. He will be home sometime tomorrow so if you want to come see him feel free to message me or gaylene. Thank you for all the support."

I've been on Doing it in the Dirt several times over the last couple of years. Bowie loved coming over to Oceanview, especially for afternoon meetings where he would go and buy a feed of fish and chips, come out to the track, and park his ute on the hill by the clubrooms. He lived and breathed speedway, and had an encyclopaedic knowledge.
My sincere condolences and those of the Wanganui Stockcar and Speedway Club are with Bowie's family, especially Nirvana-Lea, who he was so proud of. Rest peacefully mate; the final flag has fallen, and your struggle is over. Thanks for the memories.
