Qualifying points should be based on number of starters at the commencement of the meeting, eg 16 car fields means 16 points for the winner.
Getting 20 points, for convenience sake, means Competitors get 6 points for finishing last in a qualifying heat and is likely to mean another competitor who misses a race and doesn't get any points misses qualifying or starts further back in the field for the final.
The "0" points 1nz recorded last night may be significant in the final results

All cars get points for a DNF in a race Wasn't at the meeting but from what I managed to see on facebook, and am happy to be corrected, 1nz had a DNS in one race so scored '0' points. Its not the zero points, its the 4 or 5 point loss for not being able to start. Eg: 16 car field using 20 points for 1st, 15th place gets 6 points the 16th car (DNS) in the group gets 0. Using 16 points for 1st, 15th placed car gets 2 points, 16th car (DNS) gets 0. End result is a 4 point penalty which could impact the make up of the final grid positions. Just my opinion

And would still be in top 16, at present 19th or 20th.

You are correct Graeme. It unfairly affects the contact classes with a qualifying DNF, and the non contact classes with a qualifying DNS as it has done here. 1nz has effectively lost 4 or 5 points to the rest of the field, and while over 5 heats he should still qualify but will be further back on the grid on a track surface where passing will be at a premium. I feel it's a rule that should be in the rule book for SNZ championships, that the number of points awarded for the win should equal the number of cars in the largest qualifying group, and that groups should be balanced so that no group has no more than one car than any other group.
A driver is already penalised for his DNS. He should get zero points for that. However, he doesn't deserve all of the other drivers scoring a bonus 5 points just for driving out the gate.
