The number of seats provided around the speedway last season were only about 1400. The total number of seats once this work is done will be 2800 with the consent allowing up to 3000 if we can find another 200 and put them up.
The basic layout will place a large grandstand on the front straight of about 2000 seats, and this will be moved forward to give everyone a great view of the racing. This stand is the replacement of the concrete grandstand and has about 600 more seats than the upper deck of the old grandsdtand - so it should become a new 'favourite pozi' for many. The other 800 seats will go on the back straight in more or less the same place as they are now at the top of the grassed embankment.
That will more than double the number of seats and also free up the grassed embankments for people who like to spread out a blanket. Overall it will lift the total capacity back to where it was before the grandstand was closed and make things a lot more comfortable for everyone.

Was there any indication given as to the wording Temporary grandstand seating ,in a time frame of possibilities to move forward or otherwise . " Gone of the old ,and up with the new ", We certainly had some memorable times ,from clouchester park to waikaraka ,,the old wooden seats will never be the same

Midway. The temp stand can be temp for 15 years apparently (getting re cert'ed each year?). Biggest thing for the Club is that we won't be paying ($40k) to put grandstands up and down each season (x6). It's cost the Club a fortune over the 6 years. Money that would have been reinvested into the facilities. The "Temp" stand will be there for good ;-).

Let's hope this is the 1st positive step forward that the council is going to finally recognise Waikaraka Park as an asset to the city , and the planned redevelopment of the sports arena including WP gets the green light and actioned sooner than later. While the seating debacle has dragged on and on the committee has still provide one of the most consistently best racing surfaces in the country. Hopefully when the gates reopen for the new season we are greeted with a fresh , welcoming atmosphere that we want to return to week after week. Speedway thru out the country should be turning the Covid border closed situation into a positive and making sure their venues are well advertised locally to attract the NZ'ers who normally travel abroad for their holidays but now have to holiday within our borders add speedway to their summer holiday experience and hopefully get hooked and return with their families for years to come. I believe it would be fitting to called the new grandstand { LANCE GRANDSTAND } in recognition of Lance's 50 yrs of consecutive competition which he is celebrating this season.

Was there any indication given as to the wording Temporary grandstand seating ,in a time frame of possibilities to move forward or otherwise . " Gone of the old ,and up with the new ", We certainly had some memorable times ,from clouchester park to waikaraka ,,the old wooden seats will never be the same Yes, there have been a lot of personal messages coming in on variouus social media chennels about people's personal memories of the grandstand. Some may remember the infamous 'Piston Bar' under the grandsatnd and having to buy a ticket at race control to exchange for a beer at the bar as the common way around liquor license rules for pretty much every sports club back in the day. Personally I remember the sound of hundreds of tin cans being kicked down the terraces after racing by the 'speedway kids' collecting cans for a couple of bucks of recycling value while the BBQ's warmed up in the pits. The consent for the temporary grandstands and toilets are for 3 years and can be rolled on 3 years at a time with engineering inspections. The thing to note is they can't go past 15 years because the things they are made of simplyt can't be consented past 15 years under the NZ Building Code. So the clock is already ticking on getting to a permanent new grandstand along with other upgrades to bring the place back to top quality for the next generation of Waikaraka Park racers, fans, and club. A few things need to happen. Firstly, the masterplan has to successfully go through the public hearings process and move forward. We are reasonably confident we have the numbers on this. Then we need to engage with funding agencies (all of which basically rely on pokies revenue and are suffering due to Covid shut downs) to begin to impliment the masterplan. This is the next challenge. A few have already suggested this thread will still be going in 2030 - thats not far away given the plans our club has and current funding constraints, but we are working hard to make sure things happen sooner than' that. I hope the naysayers will embrace the improvements as they roll out and see them for what they are - a club putting in the hard yards to advance the sport and put down the foundations for future generations of racers to have a secure 50 years like we have enjoyed.
