Does anyone know what Bruce Robertson has planned for the upcoming season at Western Springs? He appears to have been silent since ousting Bill. Is there a new website? Is there a new Facebook page? In previous seasons season ticket options etc were available by now.
Just wondering what is going on.

Or new postings on Facebook page. Would have expected atleast a new improved Website by now. I know is alot to do. But need to keep fans informed. |

Bruce Robertson appeared on the "Doing it in the Dirt" radio show on 06 August 2020. He confirmed John McCallum will be managing Western Springs this season. Opening meeting will be 7 November with a small fireworks display (3 minutes, no higher than 48 metres). There is a chance some international drivers will base themselves here for the season, but they have options for those international meetings (mentioned Saloons, Super Saloons, Superstocks and FMX). There will be a four round Midget series across Western Springs, Waikaraka, Palmerston North (Teams Champs Weekend), and Meeanee. Seemed keen to get the Sidecars to return at some point, without getting in the way of what Rosebank are doing. Since then it has been confirmed the Saloon Speedweek will be part of the show on 2 January. And we know from the Palmerston North calendar that the Midget Series is called the "BT Memorial" series. no way they can run superstocks at Western Springs. They will all be blackflagged for noise before a lap is done.
I do not know how they get away with it at other tracks.

heard rumour about who will be running things but stuff rumours lets hear facts This could be Pixie Dust  ,but a certain voice of high ground made a whisper of a gentleman called John ,and there is some barges that commute on the harbour with a island down towards Kawakawa bay full of red chip ,known as Mccullans?? ,so if J.M .,is the man ive spelt the beans .... |

Whoever it is they need to get off their butt and start communicating with the fans. If they are going to run super stocks at WS I won’t be attending. There are plenty of other venues running them for people to attend if that’s their thing. For me WS is open wheelers and needs to stay that way.

Seems fans need to find out themselves. Which isn't on !!!! Agree Super Stocks are to loud for Springs. Is definitely an open wheel track. |

For big stock car meetings the Springs is a better venue. Waikaraka has very limited seating and stockcars do not need the size of Waikaraka Parks track to race on. I will go for sure.
Reading the pixie dust Mt Smart is back on the agenda. Will be interesting to see how it rolls out. Lets see what happens in 2029.

I don't think you will see Superstocks racing seriously at Western Springs. The wall is unsuitable for the class and presents a serious safety impediment.
If they do make an appearance it will most likely be in the form of an exhibition. Limited car numbers and special racing rules.
Personally I struggle to see positives. To the traditional open wheel fan Suoerstocks are slow, cumbersome, unresponsive machines that make a lot of noise but don't have the speed to match. Would they attract additional fans to the venue? Maybe, but I'm not convinced the numbers through the gate would be voluminous.

Over the years I have heard these comments that the "wall is not suitable for stockcars and presents a serious safety impediment" but no-one has ever said in what way. There seems to be one set of rules in the Rule Book to cover all classes, so is Western Springs wall sub-standard? There are two components being a wall and a safety fence. You may note at most New Zealand Speedway tracks they have a wall, generally a metre or so in height with the safety fence set back from the wall creating a ledge. Often the wall will be slanted away from the infield at an angle. Napier being the best example. In a crash it's the sudden stop that causes injury. A good wall will help dissipate the energy of a crash. The angle of the wall at a traditional Stockcar track will flick the car upward on impact. Sometimes you may have seen a car with the right hand wheels driving along the top of the wall. There are two problems with the Western Springs wall (for Stockcar classes). First problem in the height of the wall. It's big and there is no way a Stockcar is going to ride the wall. Second problem is the angle for the wall. It's rather vertical in nature. The fear is if a Stockcar was to hit the Springs wall at speed, the Stockcar would come to a sudden stop. That would expose the driver to large G forces and thus increase the chances of driver injury. It's not a case of the Springs wall being sub-standard. It's a case of the wall not being designed for contact classes. |

Probably the only way to test the Western Springs wall is to actually run Superstocks and Stockcars for a few nights then if it actually holds up and the racing is good and safe use the venue for the Teams Champs and take advantage of the greater crowd capacity of the venue. A higher and more verticle wall could in fact change the landscape of Teams racing as we know it and be a point of difference to Palmys event.
With the probable lack of International drivers this year most meetings for the Open-wheelers will realistically only be club meetings anyway and to ensure they get a reasonable number of meets they could support the feature events at Waikaraka Park. Its always good to have a hot-dog class as will be happening at the Palmy teams meeting with the middle-sized Open-wheelers.
In this new Covid19 world we all have to look at new opportunities to stimulate the economy and open peoples eyes to other classes of Speedway that will undoubtedly broaden peoples horizons and give better "bang" for their buck.
