Bugger, not just Covid to worry about with speedway it seems.I did notice at Rotorua Peter Rees,s car did seam a little quieter, not sure how 30 Superstocks going into the first corner at Rotorua can be 95 decibels though 👂

An interesting listen alright. Certainly not going to get any easier to operate with the scrutiny on noise levels and here's hoping we can still hear the roar of V8's at speedway for years to come. Heaven forbid this leads to EV's as a solution!

Personally the car I can pick out on any track during a superstock race is the V6 of Daryl Wallace, don't know if it's actually louder but it seems it. Unfortunately noise has been the cause of a lot of motorsport finding it difficult, burying our heads in the sand won't make the problem go away but the 85db that was mentioned is also unrealistic to expect as I doubt that most road cars would meet it

Noise is in the ear of the beholder. We love the sound of v8's or v6's but the level which causes permanent damage to your hearing or annoyance to others is where the authorities step in and unfortunately it then becomes black and white text book ruling not personal taste. To me I love the sound of older trucks with the roar of a screaming Detroit or an old style Cummins motor with Jake brakes that would deafen out any conversation on the street. Dairy factories that have been on the same spot for 50+ yrs now get noise control notices brought on by people who chose to purchase a lifestyle block nearby. Unfortunately sound travels and as a sports best defence is to abide by the rules and authorities and whinger's can't touch you. Best example of sound traveling and annoyance to others is cars with boom boxes fitted which effects everyone except the person in the vehicle.

sometimes it is the tone/pitch rather than the actual dba that makes some cars sound louder.
seems Superstocks come in under the 95db yet the awful noise they make is at such a pitch that it sounds louder

Interesting discussion, no mention of distance in these measurements (85dBa @ 300 meters is easy, at 1 m not so much) Lifted this from the AA website: The only way to stop getting tickets in future is to repair the exhaust back to the manufacturers original standard, or have it tested using a decibel meter and issued with a certificate proving it does not exceed the maximum limits for that class of vehicle (generally 95 decibels for a car registered before June 2008; 90dB for cars registered after that if built from 1985-on). So road cars can be 90dBa My understanding of environmental noise is that's its an integral over time usually 60min (from memory Ruapuna is 15min), so not directly coupled to instantaneous individual noise source measurement (so I don't think instantaneous spikes are a real issue). I believe that the FIA has a noise standard that is static and can be performed during technical inspection, it has from memory it has four levels (so different classes have different noise specification), I would hope that the board is also be looking at this standard. This allows the average over a meeting to be lowered.

I remember one year at Hawkes Bay Rally an over eager cop parked along the rally route about 1km from the service park and had a field day issuing tickets to the rally cars

I know pushing my luck here putting product on this site but noticed Trade Tested have CEM Sound Level Meter @ $69 plus freight. Don't know if these would be of any help to a competitor to at least have some idea of their DB reading, they go to 130db but may be unsuitable for vehicle testing. Testing would have too be at operational RPM and certain distance from vehicle. Will SNZ be doing noise checks at say Green sheeting.

The noise subject was the talk of the Park years ago when a certain entertainer came to visit and bought along some of his troops . I personally bought and still have a noise level meter that was compliant to SNZ to which Ron Bellette RIP stood on the in field about centre of the back straight and recorded DB readings ,hence one or two street stock drivers got black flagged .

Brought one of the trade tested noise meters out of curiosity, would say unsuitable for track use as 1.5 meters from source but ok to give idea where your at. The old A series BMC motor with good induction and extraction measured between 95.6 db and 97.3 db on fast idle , just passed LV Cert many years ago due to being on the noise limit. SNZ should make readings available early in the season e.g green sheeting or practice so competitors don't get sidelined at championship meeting which they probably taken time off work to get there.
