Good interview from Jase and sounds like he persisted in chasing Asher for an interview. I find it strange that top speedway drivers struggle to do interviews or even make themselves available for interviews. I believe top speedway drivers, sportsman or athletes have a responsibility to their sport and their fans to speak to the media surrounding their competition. I just don't think speedway does a good job at promoting our top drivers. Some of the best drivers for interviews: Rodney Wood, Shane Penn even Pete Rees himself, make themselves available and interviewed well. I thought Asher started off with a bit of an attitude, "like this is all a bit of a hassle and I'd rather be doing something else" but once he relaxed he finished well. Just disappointing in a way that Jase had to chase him for a year. What do others think?

I think you will find Asher to be a great guy to have a chat to about speedway if you have the chance, He is more of a do the talking about his own racing on the track kind of guy.

Interesting that he really dislikes the budget racers of the sport stirring things up and damaging the bigger $ cars.

Just disappointing in a way that Jase had to chase him for a year. What do others think? Asher’s reluctance to do the interview was based off a concern that this was going to be a place where keyboard warriors would have the chance to get stuck into with more of an audience gathered in one place. I assured him that are shows are moderated and questions are screened. Truth is that in this sport, if you are successful then the territory that comes with it isn’t favourable. This gives people the right to say whatever they want about you. If your successful your a cheat or a chequebook racer and the list goes on. The Rees name in this sport draws a huge amount of attention which most being positive, but then there is an element of the negative. It is a well known fact that the negative people in this sport, or any sport for that matter, have the loudest voices. After prolonged exposure to these types of behaviours, people tend to try and reduce the amount of negativity by keeping to themselves and with Asher, this is certainly the case. There is no disrespect or reluctance…. It’s caution and wary movements.

Interesting that he really dislikes the budget racers of the sport stirring things up and damaging the bigger $ cars. Is that because the budget guys are more entertaining and drive them like they are designed to do? Sounds like sour grapes.

Reading all this dribble about A Rees I dont blame him if he dosent like doing interviews Why would he want to. Agree .. It takes all types to race and I think the point he was trying to make was more along the lines of guys who have no intentions of qualifying for a New Zealand Title taking out those that do want to qualify just to make a name for themselves by taking out a top competitor. Yep, they have every right to do so, but he was simply pointing out that its frustrating ... But take from it what you will.

As frustrating as it is being taken out by ‘budget racers’ could you imagine how frustrating it must be for budget racers having to put up with the wealthy in what was intended to be a budget class? Between the endless supply of new tyres, buses loaded with more spares then any one car could need, rules getting changed annually that add to the amount of money required to be competitive and the ability to throw money at it hand over fist do you blame budget racers for having a crack at wealthy racers? I agree it takes all types to make the world go around but every track will have a budget racer who gets slapped from pillar to post by the wealthier racers but when the budget guy has a crack the wealthier driver isn’t just faster, they’re more reliable, have more friends and are able to turn up every week and beat on that budget racer until they can’t afford to race anymore then they sell up and never come back. I say all power to anyone that wants to have a crack at any other stockcar. Once upon a time we used to applaud the man who would stop the reigning 1nz from qualifying for the nz champs and now we are talking down about them. The elite drivers only want 1 thing, 1nz. so what’s better then watching budget racers stop that from happening? I personally love it.

I think there are alot of people out there that remember who won a NZ Title from 10 or even 20years ago but couldn't care less who won lately.... That's because racing has changed.

I think it was a great interview and Asher gave a good account of himself
Social media today is brutal, however the Rees have also had plenty of challenges on and off the track from crew or drivers.
It wasn’t that long ago that dust ups in the pits or club rooms were common place and part of the folklore of the sport.
The sport needs characters and there are plenty of them out there.
I think the mystery of one interview a year is also part of building the characters
Dave Evans was legend of the sport as was Pat Westbury and getting a word out of either at the height of their careers was almost impossible
Adds to the mystique
There are those who are out there shouting from the roof tops, and those that are doing it and leaving the mystery.
We need all sorts in this sport
I also was lucky enough to witness the start of Pete’s career in Palmy when he was a no one in a low budget car taking out fast cars left right and centre
And also when he started in superstock on a really short budget and made an impact in heat 3 for Palmy for a long time
Think we’re in a golden age of stock cars and super stocks and it’s great to see Jase (another character) and the pits doing his bit to bring this sport to life.

I to remember when pete first started out in that old flat chassis with the budget 202 holden engine in it.ya never knew who he was going to turn right on including me one night when raced Graeme wards 2nd car for a season.i guess when ya get a bit older and parts etc cost a ton of $$$ these days you chase the flag
