The pits are only part of the problem. Sounds like they will be netball courts but also mentioned is an athletics track so does that mean Baypark track as we know it will have to reduce in size?

You learn to regard any utterances from the council with extreme suspicion, good seldom comes from them. The entity that is the Tauranga City Council has an extreme dislike of anything with four wheels (unless it's a bus), so maybe they've been buoyed by the construction of the new banking to the extent that they are considering converting the oval to a velodrome. Who am I to say?

Check out Blake’s Speedway Facebook page
He has a photo there showing they want Baypark moved by 2029

Looking at the Boffa Miskell proposal, it kinda looks like the long-term plan is to eradicate speedway - they're a bit short on specifics, but "Existing speedway track to be deleted permanently" is pretty good indication of their intentions (the oval shown on the drawing appears to be an athletics track). So where they'd suggest a speedway track should go is anyone's guess - and imagine trying to get it through the resource consent procedures in these politically correct times!

They're going to turn it into a full blown athletics facility and host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Bugger, just when we thought Baypark was back on track. If the council is anything like the Auckland Council, Baypark will still be right where it is now, in 25 years. The whole plan sounds extremely vague. Let's do it on the terracotta, Barry B

Be very wary when politicians use buzzwords like "improved living standards", "transformative projects", "we are on the same side" and "knit together".
This has expensive cluster&^%$ written all over it

Remember Tauranga doesn’t have a council. It was disfunctional and replaced by Government appointed commissioners.

Remember Tauranga doesn’t have a council. It was disfunctional and replaced by Government appointed commissioners. I hadn't forgotten, but surely the commissioners don't intend remaining in situ forever..........or do they? Barry B

The politician's writings are making me more nauseous than the treatment has been to date Barry B

Dead right Percy, all the cliches you mentioned, and more, in this article in the local rag: sunlive.co.nz/news/304293-upgrades-planned-taurangas-main-reserves.htmlTo build a rugby stadium they need to relocate the athletics track, and that's what a lot of this is about. Never mind that there is no parking near the mooted stadium, as attendees will either walk, cycle or bus to the venue. Of course they will.

Anne Tolley and her merry men forget one thing about all this change and multiple ideas ,that is who is going to pay for it all .. Baypark Venues has had a number different sporting activities on the cards like the netball courts in the pit area for sometime ,but nothing seems to change .And of course you have to consult the other interested party of chiefs that have there finger in the pie and that may become a headache to say the least .. Bob Clarkson made a wise decision selling out ,and good old Peter Harford will be able to listen better now to all the gossip with those new hearing aids seen on t/v in that glossy advert ...

They're going to turn it into a full blown athletics facility and host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Was that supposed to go down the water front in your backyard ,a new stadium being built to host the venue ,maybe your new mayor will push for it ,seen the PM has shown a interest ,with a major player in the construction industry having little work in the fore see able years ahead ...

Would be good to get reply on this current scenario from Grandad [ Murray Guy ], who as an ex BP competitor and Councilor would have info to quell or add to the thread.

Clarkson had a deed drawn up at the time of "gifting" this asset to these council numpties- that as i understand decreed the stadium was to be used for speedway in perpetuity. IF that is the case- i see a good case for Mr Clarkson Et Al to take a legal case on the matter.
