Oceanview Speedway celebrates its 50th anniversary this weekend, with a two-day meeting. The actual first meeting was held on 29 October 1972, but the Wanganui Stockcar and Speedway Club is taking advantage of Labour Weekend, and people will be coming from far and wide to celebrate and reminisce. All classes will get a run over the two meetings, with the Classic Stockcars on hand both days as well. Despite both Palmerston North and Stratford having their openings on Saturday and Wellington and Meeanee opening on Sunday, there are already good fields in all classes, and they're growing by the day. You can check the fields here; the fields update as entries are received. The Stockcar and Superstock fields are already looking promising. Now, a long-shot plea for help! Does anyone have a programme from Wanganui's first season? I'm finishing off the programme for this weekend, and would love to get a scanned copy or photo of the original cover that I could use. Please send me a message if you can help! Lastly, here are a couple of aerial shots of Oceanview taken around 50 years apart. Not only are there changes on the ground, but photographic technology has improved exponentially in 50 years!

Cheers.

Day 1. Painfully slow programme. 2 hours before heat 1 superstock appeared. Tracks needs a puk n bruce. Things were much better on Sunday, apart from the first two Midget heats which had a lot of cautions. The decision to run Supers and Stockcars in the later two thirds of the programme was due to the 3pm start, and a desire to give them the best track possible. Once the sun got lower the track came back to the drivers, and the fastest lap times of the weekend were in the last round of heats each day. We were also short on staff, so if you'd like to volunteer (we had the SNZ assistant head steward acting as flagman on Sunday), the club would love to hear from you. Puk and Bruce are already running four tracks, so we won't be adding to their workload any time soon

Here's an early glimpse as to what may be the dominant chassis in New Zealand Superstock racing this season. Peter Rees told me on Sunday night it was a bit surreal sitting on the dummy grid at Oceanview, surrounded by cars that he had built.

Don't get me wrong, cool photo and love Superstocks but just wish cars would go back to full bodies,I am old school but Speedway NZ should of clamped down on this at the start, there are cars racing with basically just a roll cage and it looks dam ugly, stockcars as well, there just my opinion, had my little moan now let's go racing 👍

Peter is an innovator, and he's never happy that something he has designed and built is as good as it can be. But the cars have proved their merit, and we're going to see more and more of them.

I guess you have to label it as "evolution", like it or not. Unfortunately, the same issue of questionable aesthetics has manifested itself in super saloons ... IMHO, of course.

Almost to the age of concern but dont we enjoy the sound of those historic cars ,stockcars the way they are meant to be regardless ,even in this day of age with the modern v8 s can sound great ,but oh these body shapes it is totally destroying the image the paying public come to expect . MR Rees needs to go back to how stockcars originated from and build bodies of that era ,not some un recognizable design of engineers chalk on the concrete floor ..
