Oh my god Almost 2 full laps on green with a car stopped at the end of the back straight. So dangerous and a lack of safety by the officials.

Was a good night of Midget racing with 10a Brad Mosen too quick in the end winning the North Island Midget Championship,1nz Hayden Williams getting some damage at the start putting him out of it unfortunately,1nz Luke Brown was the dude in the Modifieds winning the Dirt Cup and was surprised to see 17w Jonas England pass Jamie Fox around the outside to get 2nd,is Jamie finally passed his prime after 30 year's of great racing, sounded that way in his speech, Bradley Lane unfortunately got caught up with a slower car and got damage and was catching Luke at the start, well done to 1nz Aaron Humble winning the NZ TQ GP holding off a very quick 56a Regan Tyler, was sad to see 1nz Jarrod Fletcher roll in the 2nd saloon race after winning the first race, man at one stage there I thought we were going to have another rain out but thankfully the rain went away for a change 🙂 overall a pretty good meeting on a pretty decent track as usual at the great Waikaraka 👍

I thought the night was nice enough without rising to any great heights
I'll divide the meeting into two halves. The first half prior to the drizzle which was promising, though I found most races were done after three laps. The good guys had passed the rest in that time and beyond the initial periods there wasn't much action. Then the drizzle came and some good stuff happened during this period with cars given lukewarm laps to work the track back in prior to racing.
I would love to positively explain what the track staff were doing beyond that point in time but can't. It was like they were on autopilot and it showed the difference between what track staff need to do at 6pm vs 8pm. With what was essentially a virgin track, they seemed determined not to allow any racing width by watering and packing after every race. What followed was a high speed highway around the pole and the racing suffered for it. Only in the latter stages of the Midget feature did we see some width develop. It was good for the Modifieds but that was the track we needed 3 races ago. As such the second half of the meeting was compromised and the show was not what it could have been.
Modifieds put on one of the better pole shuffles I've seen in a long time courtesy of some forceful tactics and pushing of the proverbial envelope. Luke Brown the class of the field in the Dirt Cup which was 3 laps shy of running green to checkers. Jonas England almost got him after the caution which would have been an injustice given Brown's dominance. Modified division really is in trouble when only 15 cars muster for the Dirt Cup and half the crowd departs prior to the second biggest race of the Modified season. The fans don't seem to care for the class and I don't know where the future Modified drivers are coming from outside of having a father who also drove Modifieds.
Would have been an interesting debrief within BSL after Hunnibell collided with Guptill, the latter taking a solid hit to the wall exiting turn two. Guptill visibly unimpressed. Surprised Hunnibell was not adjudged prime cause and got to keep his spot.
Some spectacular crashes in the aptly named cemetery bend. Scott Bakers crash was one of the biggest TQ dump's I've seen and I imagine Jayeden Basalaj is a little sore today. Jarred Fletcher unlucky in the Saloons to roll having looked the class of the field. Just wrong place, wrong time.
So whilst it was good to run the titles and be at a race track, for me I was a bit underwhelmed with this one.

Still was alot better track than the Springs has produced the last 5 years or so Percy🙂at least they can race and pass, even Brad Mosen said it was a great track, sometimes you do get a bit of follow the leader because the cars are so even now.

I for one enjoyed the show, just good to get some racing again. Considering all the rain in track was in good shape, sure there were a couple of tricky patches which caught a few out resulting in tumbles. The crowd was a good sized if not up there with derby or fireworks but more than normal at The Park. Hopefully we get some more shows in this year with WP extending a welcome again. Loved seeing MK throwing the midget around in NZ again. Thought the cream rose to the top in all the classes. Fletcher was missed in the saloon races after his tumble.
Yes the BSL debrief would have been interesting esp with Bill in the crowd at The Park.

Think it's abit early to be declaring the death of the modified class just yet, With well over a dozen cars down in chch and at least half of them top quality, few more on the coast also, And the continued issues with interisland travel, it's just bloody difficult to cross the strait at present Think last year or maybe 2021 they had 40 odd cars entered for the nz title The mods are still well n truly kicking good sir ....
