Found some great Wanganui pics so figured they warranted a new thread:- 54v Roy Eaton is the original Wanganui legend, as he was one of the 2 guys who built the track back in 1972. At that stage he was captain of the Panthers (he was the original captain of the 'Black Panthers', who despite what PallMall says are the best team of all time) but gave it all away to get Ocean View up and running. He came out of retirement in the late 1970's, and represented the Warriors at the inaugural Teams Champs in 1981. Raced on until around 1983. This pic is from the 81-82 season. Not the most classically beautiful car, but a good use of a Civic body.

16v Keith Turner was the first Wanganui driver to win the NZ Champs, so he's definitely a legend. This pic is from 79/80, the season after he won. He purchased a new Lyndsay Willis chassis for his title defence, but retired at the end of the year. Incidentally, he had also started his career racing out of Palmy - those darn Wanganui ring-ins! Came back in the late 1980's, and ended up in the Warriors for the 1990 Teams Champs in a car that is now in the hands of 58k Robbie Sisson. It's my guess that Sisson's car is the same car pictured below, with the Allegro body replaced by Turner at some stage.

432v Charlie Bernsten, regarded by some as the best ever driver. Guess what, he's another Wanganui ring-in, but there you go.....moved to Wanganui when the track opened, but pretty much called it quits after suffering burns in 1973. He was another who came out of retirement in 1979/80, with a distinctive Hillman Husky body (Silver Bullet anyone??). This rare pic is from that season when the car was white - he changed it to black in 81/82 and promptly won the NZ title. Also competed in the 81 Teams Champs, and retired after placing 4th in the 1983 NZ Champs at Wellington.

Here's the programme list from the 80/81 season at Ocean View - plenty of legends there. I can count 7 NZ champions, plus as many placegetters although I doubt they all turned up on the same night that often. The early 80's were the peak of Ocean View's history, and I guess the team at the Brent Boddy speedway will be looking to replicate those glory years with the 2008 NZ Champs.......

What a line-up in that Wanganui programme -incredible! Interesting seeing how long the careers of some of these guys have been - Gary Trotter for instance.

The Car he came back in the the late 80's was one of 3 new chassis built. they were ran by Darryl Taylor, Noel Kennsington and Keith Turner. Keiths car then went to Brendon Lucas? PN. Rod McLeod 6v also pictured would rate as a Wanganui Legend he Ran that Car for a Long time before getting an ex Auckland car about the same time as Keiths return, and then his Brother ran the old Anglia for a long time off an on. The 17v Dennis Welch car was his first also raced this one in his Warriors debut against Stratty

Keiths last car DID go to Brendan Lucas as 39p. 'D' Series Ford 6,HQ box and independant Quickchange. BL took the quicky out and converted it to a semi standard stock with a Toyota diff but kept the 4 barrel carb and headers on. BL's car was the one that Boote tagged with his RR bumper before Bootys famous rocket launch at the Teams deal. A real solid old nail that I would expect is still going strong for someone somewhere.

Think you will find is that robbie sisson has this car at kihikihi, we have even asked him when he parked next to us in wangas. The one of 3 chassis, and a bit more info on the other two is that noels car went to stratford unsure of who is racing that one. And the other which tuku raced has been through a few owners(chris allen,b mallinder) mainly in wangas and I got the pleasure of racing it last season as well in the stockcars thanks to my bro. It then got sold to palmy in the same season to had 1 meeting there I think then got sold again and have no idea where it is now.
