I hadnt been around Speedway very long when I first met Mungo. He came to Nelson with that car about Easter 1982(?) and had a smashing time. Blenheim was running on the Easter Monday and as Mungo went to load his car on Llyall Graves's truck,Mungo found that the fuel pump had been broken off and was in pieces!!! I couldnt beleive what he did next,he glued the whole thing back together with Araldite, cardboard and insulation tape and bolted it back on!!! His theory was that it would be all dry and set by the time the car got to Blenheim........Yeah Right Mungo...sure it will!!! Not only did the flippin thing dry in time, the car went like a rocket,he rolled a car and won two out of the 5 races that day!!! When I caught up withn the man himself some years later he told me he still had that old pump!!!! Real hard case!!!!

Does anyone know who the photographer was that took the photo's out at Palmerston North and Wanganui in the early 80's? They are fantastic pics and our family has a lot that we bought off him!

A bit of trivia ... and like most trivia the light of reality may shine a different light on the subject .. 2XS (Palmy Radio) used to run short comedy segments based around two characters .. Mungo and Roo .. was rumoured that Mungo was played by Barry Lane or the character was based on Barry Lane. Also, was it Barry Lane who ran an early pipe dream chassis And finally .. any Graham Ekins photos would have his name etc stamped on the back .. used to do a few trade offs with him and all pics carried his mark.

Mungo and Ian Woodin from Woodville built the Pipe Dream, dare I say the original,as 7p and 7v. Ford V8 powered,Mazda diff and HQ box. Mungo would run in Palmy as 7p and Ian would be 7v in Wanganui. The car came to Nelson for a while after living at Bob Breens house in ChCh and as far as I know, is alive and well in Invercargill.Somewhere along the way after mungo and Ian had it,some body fitted a Rover V8 in it.
