Wanganui - Meeting Two - 30th November
As i'm a active 20 year old my mid section is yet to reach that of many 40 year olds, so we altered the padding in the bottom of my seat so i was able to fill my belts out better, hoping to solve the problem of slippingunder my belts. Belted up i felt more secure adn along with a few other minor adjustments we were ready for Wanganui's second meeting.
Race One:
First race up, with 7 cars, as 3nz, darryl Taylor was still unloading, we were confronted with a wet loose track. Again with "loose" grid positions i oppted to start off the back, hoping to sit back and let accident happen infront of me, while i slipped up the inside. Things didn't quite go as planned as everyone got round relatively cleanly and i found myself at the back. With the loose conditions i held the car back slightly, to try and keep consitant laps, while others over cooked corners infront of me. I managed to keep all laps relatively tidy coming accross the line in 3rd place behind 99v Diz, and 45v Steve.
Race Two:
Being a hot Sunday afternoon it was difficult to keep moisture in the track, and by the time the 8 of us got out for our second spin the track had become very black and slick. With the thought of slipping under my belts still in teh back of my mind i started off the back again, again holding back a bit, trying to keep tidy lines. the highlight of the race was when 99v, Diz came up the inside of me around the Northern corner. i fought back but knew i wouldn't be able to beat him around the outside, so slotted in behind him as we came around into the northern corner again, straightening up halfway round to turn him around, managing to get away relatively cleaning. With the rest of the race seemingly uneventful, coming across in 4th place.
Race Three:
Once belted up i tryed starting the car....nothing.... the Starter motor Gremlins from NZ champs last were back. After a push start i lined up on the dummy grid with the reassuring words from my father "Just don't stall" ;D. This race was much the same as the last, uneventful. Not much else can be said, as again i started near teh back, attempting to just keep tidy laps on an otherwise loose black track. Finishing third.
Grand Slam:
Car started up straight away, gotta hate unreliability...
Stockcars joined with superstocks, this is where the run begins. With a somewhat altered format to the start i grided up second, behind 45v Steve Guilford, The noses of all the cars pointed into the wall. I WAS hoping to back away quickly, and have the oppertunity to do my best to let the car go and sit on Steves bumper for as many laps as i could, trying to improve lines around the track, and break away from the field while the other supers were held up by some stockcars..... well..... things didn't quite pan. I backed away quickly and followed Guilford wide into the first corner, hope to find traction further out off the black line. However 71b Peter Barry had other plans diving up the inside into the first corner, i assumed trying to put me in the fence as he has been using his front bumper on the locals for two weeks. i bumped around the corner and came out RIGHT behind peter down the back straight. Knowing i'd much ground i decided it was time for pay back. I hooked onto Peters back bumper on the entry to the northern corner. With the thought of how good my belt adjustment really was, once i knew he wouldn't be able to get around the corner i let go for a second, just to slow things down a fraction, so if my belt adjustment hadn't worked i wouldn't be rendered childless for life. i then latched on again putting him in the fence, climbing under his car, bending his front bumper. As i was about to drive off cleanly i got hooked for a second angling towards him. With my foor down i slide under him again, getting stuck under him, with him pinned against the wall. the reds came out and as i sat wondering where the tow truck was.
i continued to try and free myself and looked in my rear view mirror to see 6v Dion Mooney sitting on top of 99v diz's bonnet in the southern bend, with the infield crew working to free them. while i waited i could see under my bent bonnet to see the my air filter hadn't been collected and the temperature gauge seemed steady so i presumed my radiator was still intact. when peter was lifted so i was able to back out from under him and sit ready for the restart. when the lights went green i took off, but immediately realized my back right tyre was flat. i slowed for a second and had a quick look round, not seeing anyone i had a real grudge against i pulled off, hoping to save the tyre.
I drove off and out in the pits saw that the back right rim was buggered, but the tyre was still good. apart from a flat tyre the only other damaged was superficial with a crushed bonnet, and dinged front chrome rim
The highlight of the hit was i didn't move an inch in my belts, not feeling a thing, giving me confidence back in the car.
And FINALLY last but not least. When it comes to racing in the grand slam, or any other joint races, i am of the opinion that everyone on the track should be treated as an equal. Stockcars can still go out there and do the damage to the superstocks, so if a stockcar hits me or annoys me i'll hit back. Just mentioned this after several comments recieved from seasoned and current local drivers about gaining a reputation as a "Standard Stock basher"
Panel beating has been done, but the bonnet is now looking rather second hand, the old man on the end of a mallet isn't the best for delicate panel work ;D, so anyone wishing to donate a new one contact me ;D ;D ;D (worth a try haha). we do have a spare in the shed but it came painted painted in a certain colour scheme when we bought the car that certain waganui superstock team members might not appreciate ;D
till next time
