Right, demo derby time. what would your target audience be ? plenty of the teenagers turn up. as does families in their droves who often only come to such nights. As with any track/ demo derby, it seems to pack them in.
was the demo derby the feature event - Solo's and sidecars were, hence the demo derby as well I guess. Pretty full house.
So why would you not run your demo derby to a full house, rather than start it after 11pm when many families and others have had enough and gone home already.
You really have to wonder sometimes !!

It must be last race as per SNZ policy.
What happened to hold up the rest of the meeting?

I often ask myself - "is it time for the demo derby to get the heave-ho from speedway?" Derbies often seem to be tagged with the "bogan" title or bring that culture into the realms of speedway, which in my opinion is something that speedway in New Zealand 'needs' to leave behind as it tries to move into a more mainstream and attractive sport. Why do we continue to run events that undermine what the sport is trying the achieve as far as professionalism? Unfortunately they are a very popular attraction for most people and seem destined to stay within most season calendars throughout the country for that very reason - But then hey my opinions are often heavily slammed (especially by certain users) on this board. SD it wasnt the demo derby that was the hold up it was the soslo and sidecar bike champs, the majority of the crowd came to see the demo derby as they always do to say they are past their use by date is the most ridiculous statement you have posted, the derbys are still the biggest crowd puller all over the country you sd are so out of touch

2-11pm, 9 hrs worth ??
went to ruapuna last night (first time this year as no WFG on). racing started at 7pm, was finished at about 10.15pm... (that was after the fireworks). it looked as though we would be all finished before the 9.30 pm fireworks timeslot (next to airport), so to have to re-run the midget feature after 8 lap[s because of fireworks on the track (car on fire) worked out well..excellent nights racing, with a few upside done also..keeps the kids happy...
well done ruapuna, thanks for a great night !

Everyone knew it was going to be a late night, there was 40 odd races roughly I guess. If you don't wanna miss your bed time then don't go it's pretty darn simple..

Sdemon I totally agree. Unfortunately for some of our tracks that have run out of promotional ideas the Derby is the income source that keeps the season going. And of course a big income source for SNZ with the Day Licence fee. They don't generally get the Derby fans coming back to a normal speedway meeting either. Perhaps tracks should be allowed to run Derbies and Smashfest type of events away from the normal speedway meeting to generate income.

ddint mean they were holding up the meeting as such, was meaning they were the main attraction which meant keeping the track right especially for the sidecars which i think was achieved,Saloons were there to wheel pacjk the water on the pole line for the sidecars but they made a mistake in letting the saloons have a race which ended up in over half the field getting mangled lol.

Madmarty good for New Zealand speedway - I think not! Way off topic here now....... Sdemon

Seriously though, I stand by my original post. I can almost guarantee that the recent happenings at Baypark and it's coverage would have hit most homes as "a bunch of bogans" and being at a speedway meeting, guess what? Yup speedway gets a bad rap.... Do I watch derbies...well kinda...I dont find them exciting anymore and tend to get bored with them very quickly. Certainly wouldnt go to a meeting just because a derby was the main attraction.... Sdemon and now just to please Marty, I'll bugger off back to the "OPEN WHEELER" section ;D

I have nothing to say about the hold up at HB or that, but I went to Waikaraka Park a couple weeks ago when they held there demo derby, I felt it brings down the professionalism of Speedway.
We want it to be looked at like a premier motorsport in NZ, not a bogan infuzed craze.
So I dont think a SNZ track should have them, build a farmers track for them.
so I agree with you SD.
