wow, what an experience.
it had never really hit home what i'd gotten myself in for until the we arrived at scrutineering on the Friday and i was reminded of how huge the event really is.
Nerves were mounting early and by the time we got to the track i was having doubts about how i would perform.
QUALIFYING:
ROTORUA vs. WARRIORS
I knew i wasn't starting, but with Dion experiencing some minor problems during the grand parade i attepmted to ready myself incase i had to race. Addmitedly i was slightly star struck lining up on the dummy grid, and with my head filled with all the do's and dont's on teams racing i drove out for the warm up laps.
the car didnt handle very well durin g the warm up laps, but i put this down to nerves, and the fact my steering wheel hadnt been alined properly when getting put back in after the grand parade.
i waited to make sure everyone had gridded up without any problems and drove to the infield, breathing a sigh of relief once they dropped the green flag.
the boys got off to a good start and did well to hold the top two spots for half the race, with things just not falling our way towards the closing laps. But they gave it a good shot and well done to Rotorua for getting the win.
Back in the pits i managed to make a slight d**k of myself with certain incident, the cause of which i put down to nerves nearly taking out half of steves pit crew in the process. sorry guys.
COUGERS vs WARRIORS
With everyone repaired i drove out onto the track for a second time, more relaxed this time. Then i saw Dion drive off onto the infield as they drove round to grid up and drove over to see what was happening, Evan simply said "your in"
With a quick rearrangement to grid positions i was off the back for my very first teams race. off the start i was a lil hesitent but then i drove into the first corner pushing Donny Inns. we came out of the corner first and second and i managed to push him wide on the exit to the top corner. i had a poke on the way past which resulted in me spinning onto the infield (in hind sight i should've just ducked through and taken the lead, but i'm learning). i regained around 4thISH and kept running. havign been told to take an oppertunity if it presented itself i had lined one otago car up and started to attempt to wind him up off the straight into the pit corner. but ahead of us Shag 17v(45v) put an impressive hit in on 96d donny Inns ( i think) rolling him, and i was forced to let go of the car infront, as i would've put him straight into the rollcage of his team mate.
i ressumed running once the lights turned green. as the race wore on i begun feeling a lil self concious as i hadnt really done much, when ahead of me on the start/finish straight, kerry was putting 93d up the fence and Donny Inns came in to help his teammate, but ended up bouncing off Kerry and spinning across the straight infront of me. i could've braked and missed him but i thought it was too good an oppertunity to miss, i lined up the front end and kept my foot down.
i slipped under my belts catching myself AGAIN . and my visor flew off, so with dirt in my eyes i tried to power back onto the track. accidently hitting donny in the process. sorry.
the car kept going and i came across the line in second place. i explained myself when called up to the referees box after the race and was given a smack on the hand. so off home to rest up and repair the car for saturday
warriors finish 1, 2, 3, 4. with darryl picking up the win. but a well done must be given to the otago side, they fought well the whole race and kept going as long as they could.
ready to head off
