As someone who has always refused to pay to watch TV (Sky) Speedway is the only thing that would tempt me to part with any hard earned cash. What you gunna do when Tv is switched from analouge to digital and without satalite dishes you wont be able to watch tv, its coming, sooner then people think. The tight Scot inside me says I can live easily without TV, our ancestors managed . So I'm hoping your able to achieve the goal so our TV does not become a monitor for watching our extensive speedway DVD collection ;D

I really think that this is a dumb pole, given the chance any speedway fan would want to watch it on TV.
So i guess i wont put my vote

Not knocking your efforts Matt, but to say "I went to a speedway discussion board and asked who would watch speedway if it were on TV, and all except 2 who responded said yes they would" prob wouldn't carry much weight with many people. Bit like asking on a vegetarian recipe website if they would rather have chicken soup or vegie soup, and being suprised when 95% of people said vegie soup. It doesn't necessarily follow on that just cause something is on telly that sponsors will flock to it, it's called preaching to the converted in minority sports, which like it or not is what our sport is.

Thanks for the feedback, but as i see it at the moment, nobody else seems to be trying to do anything so i may aswel give it a go while i have the pushing power of my job.
The poll is all about figures, as a start, im yet to talk with each club as to what figures they have for me.

[quote author=devilracer69a board=polls thread=11685 post=139058 time=1248259448 Beady, tut-tut, shame on you not having Sky, we need to talk. Its only cause im not going to pay to watch soccer, golf and tennis, would rather go watch paint dry especially if its drying on the Stockcar ;D[/quote] Point taken, there is plenty of pple out there just like you, including myself, i work for Sky and dont even have the sports channels, no point, not enough motorsport for my liking.

PPV are very expensive to set up, and at about $45000.00 there would have to be a large sponsor coming on board.

Would be great for the sport, as nzv8s are hitting tv3 soon, that also will be great for motor racing in nz. I would have to get sky to watch it tho..

just out of curiousity , how do sky gauge who is watching what and how much/often?? or is the majority of what we see only there because the big corporations/sponsers have paid for it to be there??

We are able to see when people are watching which channels with some fancy technology we have. But your right, most of what you see is because big sponsors have paid for it to be there. We have 3 tiers to sport, 1, Rugby, Cricket, Netball, Leauge 2, Golf, football, Motorsport 3, Other grassroot sports, tennis, badminton etc What annoys me is Motorsport is in tier 2 but where is the speedway? The CEOs response was, whos paying for it to be there? Is it worth putting on? This is where i came into it, i need to show him if it is/isnt worth putting speedway on TV. Going by the small amount of votes, maybe its not.

what you need to do devil is find out what numbers "the boss" needs to see before he would consider it. then the task is to gather those numbers in some form, not sure how, but thats your job. like i said earlier in the thread, most clubs should have attendance records for past seasons, im pretty sure we topped 40,000 (nelson) last season. with that you can show how many attend nationally and use that to back up your claim. get into the ear of snz!!!! they should be just as interested in seeing this happen, and perhaps could be able to assist. it has worked in the past with sky filming and broadcasting, thou i think we all payed for that via licences etc. just some ideas. p.s the "big(sky)brother is watching me eh. i always had my suspicions. ;D

The problem, as always, is always the quality - as others have said, on a speedway website the vast majority are always going to say yes (even though half of them currently don't have Sky), but unless it's a well-done production it's going to turn off wayyyyyyy more people than it will turn on. To me, as far as television goes, Speedway comes under Motor-sport, and I feel that's the best place for it. If we're going to turn new people on to our sport, surely current petrol-heads are the most likely.
Speedway is more a spectator sport than a televised sport, in my opinion, although having television coverage does lend the sport some credibility.

Filming speedway is hard in the sense with ball sports you follow the ball with speedway who do you focus on : the Leader or the Stirrer or the Pack: Then ask yourself this question If you are watching who do you follow your favourite driver or someone who may or may not stir it up or the leader
That makes it even harder for the tv guys behind the camera because they dont know who to watch and follow ; or do you have 26 cameras 1 for each car

I voted NO as
1- I dont have Sky TV just blue sky out window
2- Be better to get more people to breath and see it live at the tracks.
3- Keep it on TVNZ
4- If i had SKY TV i would not be able to afford 60+ meetings a season LIVE.

Most of the people that go and watch speedway live, would love to watch it again on tv, even up to a month later. I know i would! When there used to be a program on sky around 8 years ago i loved watch the auckland teams champs again, and again. Two guys did it, not sure what it was called. I still have most of they on TAPE haha. May have to watch and see what it was called.

I've said it for years... Why don't Sky have a motorsport channel? ? When it comes to viewing speedway on TV I've noticed most footage has been shot high up looking down on the track, which makes the action look very slow and at times boring... If I was living the dream, I would think outside the square.....Its all about how you capture the footage. This is how i would do it.... I would have two cameras at opposite ends of the track in the usual place, high up back from the fence, 2 mobile cameras on the infield and 4 mobile cameras covering all 4 corners from the outside of the track plus one camera in the pits. To top it off have one or two cameras deciated to capturing uniquie angles, that have the risk of being destroyed, in return for the money shot... Also during the week between racing, visit various workshops, get interviews etc. All motorsport on TV now days has in car cameras, love em or hate then (no names;-) they are a must!
