UPDATE: Richie Stanaway - Sachsenring Germany - ADAC Formula Masters
On Friday Richie Stanaway set fastest time in both qualifying sessions in the ADAC Formula Masters at Sachsenring in East Germany. Unfortunately his best lap in Qualify 1 was deemed to have infringed a yellow flag so his 2nd best lap was taken as the qualifying time (4th). Added to that was a 5 lap penalty resulting in 9th on the grid. A very harsh penalty compared to NZ and one that not all the other deserving entrants in the race suffered. Qualify 2 resulted in pole position.
Race 1 on Saturday was always going to be a challenge for a young Kiwi with a hunger to win. Richie quickly achieve 6th place but ran wide trying to pass for 5th resulting in damaged undercar aerodynamics. He continued with a difficult car to finish in 7th position out of 30 far more experienced starters.
Race 2 on Sunday resulted in a podium finish - 3rd. From pole position Richie battled a clearly difficult car suffering understeer. His team expressed both disappointment at their choice of setup and astonishment that Richie was able to hold on for 3rd place. His team mate started 3rd and finished 5th with an identical setup.
A spokesman from Team Ma-Can says, "Richie has had a difficult weekend but still managed to drive at the front of a very competitive and experienced field of determined young drivers. With more experience and knowledge of both the tracks and car, he will get even quicker".
Comment from Richie is, "Sachsenring is a a very fast and demanding circuit. I felt confident and expected to win both races. The yellow flag penalty was a shock as I maintained position and followed others through the sector. My mistake in race 1 didn't help. Race 2 in a difficult car was my worst race in Germany to date but still resulted in a podium finish. I've certainly learnt a lot to take to Oschersleben next month".
Richie's NZ mentor, Tauranga's Maurice O'Reilly says, "Richie's inexperience is clearly a factor but nevertheless he is demonstrating astonishing pace in a car he's driven for a very short time on circuits he's never seen before. Those who invited him to Europe remain very impressed".

Richie certainly is heading up the ladder at a cracking pace. was a good move heading to Europe instead of completing the Ozzie F Ford champs.
there has to be a spin-off for NZ open wheeler racing when there are Kiwi rookies turning up in Euro series and slotting straight into cars they don't know, on tracks they don't know.
maybe we will see more aspiring 'hot-shoes' from Europe entering down here entering our series as our programme obviously works.

Poll race to get to pole28 Sep 2009 SUNLIVE www.sunlive.co.nz/index.aspxBay of Plenty racing car driver Richie Stanaway is honing in on a place in the top three of an on-line voting poll to give him free entry into a racing shoot-out competition in England. All of the drivers listed on www.driverdb.com can be voted for with Richie so far proving a popular choice although he says he is unsure of exactly how well he is doing.“The trouble is it’s been hard to charge as they keep it (the tally) hidden all the time,” says Richie. Richie is a 17 year old who is turning heads on the racing scene with some impressive performances to date. These include being New Zealand Formula Ford Champion 2008-09 and winning the Toyota Racing Series Hamilton 400 Trophy 2009. Richie says getting in the top three of the online poll would open up a great opportunity for him. “There are lots of opportunities in Europe for racing, but this one could be the real ticket.”Making it to the shoot-out is just one step in the process and once in it, Richie says he will have to perform well to win. Winning the shoot-out would mean Richie would secure a place in a Formula Three team for the next racing season. Formula Three is the training ground for Formula One. It is the possibility of racing in Formula One that excites Richie the most. “It’s by far the best motor sport and although lots of drivers from Australasia want to race V8s in Europe it’s F1.”Winning the online opinion poll is the only way for Richie to get to the shoot-out as it costs too much otherwise; $20,000. Voting in the competition closes September 30. Link to voting ... www.driverdb.com/drivers/24333/

An open letter from Maurice O'Reilly ...
Hi
On Monday Richie Stanaway & I leave for the final ADAC Formula Masters round at Oschersleben in Germany.
Team Ma-Con has been asked by an European Development Team to provide an extra 'Test Day' prior to the race so that they can evaluate Richie a little more and also to enable him to work on the car setup and learn the track without the pressure of a competitive environment.
Following the race weekend we fly to England where Richie will participate on Tuesday 20th in the evaluation for the Grand Prix Shootout.
That night we board the plane to get him back to Surfers Paradise on Thursday morning to practice in the Formula Ford for the A1GP support races.
It's a very full fortnight!
Regards Maurice O'Reilly

all he needs now is kenny smith as manager, mentor .. He likely has Kenny watching and contributing ... But he is very fortunate to have Maurice O’Reilly. [glow=red,2,300]And just who is Maurice O’Reilly?[/glow] Contrary to all expectations Maurice O’Reilly made it to middle age. The journey was – well - interesting. From the moment he gained paid employment, life took on meaning and purpose. Following a meteoric rise through the Bank of New Zealand ranks after they discovered his sales and marketing skills, he left to become self employed at age 20. Six years of business success lead to 4 years OE traveling through 144 countries - much of this in the company of his wife who remains his best friend and ‘care giver’. On return to New Zealand the couple established and operated a number of successful businesses that were national leaders in their various field. He retired from full time work at 52 to pursue those things that provided his most enjoyment. Maurice has always been a competitive person. In sport, business and social life he aims high and usually succeeds. He has been active in local politics, business mentoring and writing humorous stories for a wide range of publications. However, his principal love has been things mechanical. He has flown fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, raced jet boats, been a Search & Rescue skipper and is active in 4WD - but most of all, raced cars. He co-founded the Bay Offroaders and is a Life Member of the Tauranga Mount Motorsport Club. His principal love is single seater race cars and in these he won the NZ Bruce McLaren Championship. Success in Classic & Historic race cars, Porsche and touring cars have lead to an amateur career of international endurance racing. He now competes for numerous teams in long distance racing all over the world. In 2006 Maurice set the New Zealand Diesel Speed Record and together with friends driving the same car established the 24 hour Diesel distance record. At an age when most people know better, Maurice is planning a number of challenges that will provide pleasure and satisfaction for many more years. Richie Stanaway is in good company!

Podium finish for Richie19 Oct 2009 - SunLive reports Tauranga 17 year old driver sensation Richie Stanaway continues to impress in world motorsport with a podium finish in the German Formel Master series at the Oschersleben circuit at the weekend. On a damp and cold track in the first race, Richie launched his Team Ma-Com single seater at the start with great prowess and leapt from seventh on the grid to a remarkable third at the first corner before moving through to second soon afterwards. Richie Stanaway saw Team Ma-Com through to a podium finish in Europe at the weekend. Richie's team mate Adrian Camperfield started from pole and made an excellent start to be about five car lengths ahead of the next car by turn one – a position he did not relinquish for the rest of the race. From there it was a procession lead by Team Ma-Com. Either Adrian or Richie were fastest on every lap and by the end Adrian was six seconds ahead of Richie who was a further 20 seconds ahead of the third placed car. Overnight the organisers made the decision to demote a number of drivers for disrespecting the yellow flag in qualifying – forcing drivers to rely on their second best qualifying time. Richie was among those penalised and finally started the second race from fifth position. Unfortunately for Richie, who wanted more wet conditions, the track was dry and cold and offered low grip on the slick tyres. Even so, he had another excellent start and was third into the first corner. Over the next three laps he challenged strongly for second but when he attempted the pass the other driver moved over and made contact. This caused Richie to spin. He quickly recovered and was able to rejoin the race in eighth position, but showing true fighting spirit, he fought his way past three cars and to fifth place at the flag. Team Ma-Com was delighted to finish third in the championship and team owner Marian Hamprecht was very complimentary of Richie’s efforts; he re-stated his determination to put together a deal for Richie to undertake a full season in Europe.

Richie's facebookTauranga racing driver Richie Stanaway has driven to victory on the streets of Monaco, taking his maiden victory in the GP2 single-seater category which is the main support series to Formula 1. Stanaway's win is the biggest success for a Kiwi driver at Monaco since Denny Hulme's 1967 grand prix victory and follows up three GP2 podium finishes by Mitch Evans in 2012 and 2013.
