www.speedway.co.nz/asp/news.asp?ID=80There are now strict fines for over noise vehicles. How are we supposed to know if our cars (or bikes) are over the limit? Without a warning, this would be totally unfair to impose a fine straight up. I have been told that I was over noise with my last car, then to be told next meeting that it was alright. I didn't even change anything.... they used a different meter. So I wouldv'e been out of pocket under the new rules. This sux!

Well the 95dB rule has been in force for nearly 15 years, so it's probably about time SNZ got a little tougher with those pushing the boundaries. The alternatives aren't good........
The SNZ website actually says "The warning system has been replaced with a harsher serious (this is probably meant to say series?) of recommended penalties, to ensure that the issue of noise is resolved".
It doesn't say you're automatically going to be met at the pit gate by "plod" with his fine book. But as mentioned above, if we are not all pro-active, the alternatives are not good.

Unfortunately, the way in which sound is measured as standard dB (decibel) is not a perfect science. Without getting to technical and using a bunch of jargon, a dB test on the same engine at the same track with the same machine at the same distance can change depending on the enviroment, such as background noise, atmospheric presure and wind direction (among other things). This is why your engines often appear much louder inside your shed as opposed to sitting at the end of your driveway, or out in a padock. So unfortunately, your engines noise level can seem to differ night to night. A standardised test for SNZ to use may be an idea to combat the problem.

This morning I decided to measure the distance between pole lines at the end of the grandstand at woodford glen using google earth, it would appear to be about 40m or so. So if you're 25 meters from the pole line with your sound meter as per: S3 SOUND: No vehicles shall exceed 95 dba. Measured from 25 meters on the infield from pole line on fastest part of straight with meter held not less than 1 meter above ground, the meter in question will be only 15meters from cars accelerating on the front straight. It strikes me that this will have considerable effect on the sound pressure reading.
