No disrespect to Ernie, but whats happening to the track? The track at Stratford last night was bloody Crap. I saw two complete wheels come of cars last night because of how rough it was in the same race, my wife baby an i were standing where 1 wheel come over the fence but i had decided to move around further just before race started luckily. The ute that the tyre hit wasn't so lucky it wrote it of smashing windscreen and caving roof in. 100 stockcars for the north Islands is gunna be far worse then the 60 we had last night. Whats happening to it? Not the first time its cut up bad this season, does somebody have to get hurt before they sort it. What do you other drivers reckon?

Hi Team, unfortunately we have had two attempts at adding new papa, prior to the last two meetings, on both occassions the track was ripped to be ready for the new papa and both times it rained for the rest of each week. Ernie is doing the best he can with the time available, usually one afternoon. Once again next week we will hopefully get the new surface in, get it rolled, and then on the 26th we are having our anual Big Rig display and that will set the track surface again. Point to note: it is often as easy as asking a question on the night if you have concerns. Cheezel

i am shocked at the article in taranaki daily news bout straty speedway been to dangerous and people getting knocked out they should start looking at the seats that they r useing some of those seats r made for non contact class not stock cars

the focus of the article is on the track surface and the fencing really. the track needs to be sorted before the bigger meetings such as the nth island stocks and nz midgets. a wheel went flying on saturday night and cleaned the fence easily, easily enough to clear a parked van and land well away from the track.
i have no doubt the track will be improved and race worthy. the fence is a concern though and the proposed fence in the article would be an awesome introduction.
the ministock that flipped saturday night got as high as we were sitting, which was 2nd top row of the terrace seating

As cheezel has said in the second post due to weather and time the track preperation has been difficult , at the end of the day with regards to the fence it wouldnt have mattered if the fence was raised to the new height referred to in the daily news the height the tyre cleared the fence was considerably higher than the raised fence height would be.Not that i have been racing this year but the mod class on a whole would rather have a rougher track with drive than a smooth surface with a dust bowl trailing behind . Like it or not non speedway people that have attened the last two meetings at stratford have certainly got good entertainment for there dollar mainly because of the spectacular crashes, its the old adage bash and crash and smash will entertain joe blogg public everytime over spectacular driving.

correct me if im wrong as im sure there will b some experts here but last season im sure everyone was asking why isnt the track ripped or why is it so dusty? ?? ernie well done mate for having a darn good go at preparing the track so it isnt so dusty (ripping it) but as already stated time and weather etc etc comes down to not enough time in the day is there anyone looking at why wheels are coming off the cars or is it just the tracks fault? the track is the best ive seen in a long time other than last weekend due to weather again and as for our local newspaper reporter should go to reporting on the cricket or sumthing never has a good word to say let alone who won what how and when

I second that Dwayne. The Daily News is turning into a sunday type paper. They only seem interested in the 'sensation' stories and mis report most things and then just cover it by issuing an apology later.

I second that Dwayne. The Daily News is turning into a sunday type paper. They only seem interested in the 'sensation' stories and mis report most things and then just cover it by issuing an apology later. I'll come to the defence of the paper... I think it is awsome that the local newspaper includes a report each monday or tuesday after a race meeting at Stratford. The full results are always tabled in the sports results section next to the rugby, soccer, volleyball etc etc. We have a keen reporter who spends the better part of a day researching the story that he sends to the editor for submission to the paper. The final story that gets published has usually been subject to chopping and changing to get it to fit in the paper... Todays report in the Daily News is great, and puts the U23 champs in great light, along with some highlights from the rest of the meeting. Not to mention the Stratford Press are now also running stories about their local speedway. What you have to remember is these guys are not speedway enthousiasts, they are reporters covering local events using information supplied to them from within the speedway group. You guys are so quick to bag the paper but I bet you would moan just as much if the local papers ignored the sport as well... Like I said, I think its great that our local media is covering the sport!! Regarding the track - it cut up pretty bad on saturday night but at least there was no dust!! (yay!!) As has been explained by several people here the weather has just been a pregnant dog and getting work done on the track has been next to impossible. Drew

all valid points and all make sensible and calculated arguments, which in turn offers good feedback to the club in question.

No Drew I am not quick to bag the paper at all. In fact I cancelled my subscription months ago (only got yesterdays paper because I was told there was a big write up about Under 23s) because of a major mis-reported article which was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. The paper has printed an article that portrays Stratford Speedway as unsafe. I didnt see any results in the article. Great picture of yours by the way Drew!! ;D And another point I would like to make about the state of the paper is Steve Williams comments and reaction to being asked for an interview by the Daily News. He replied by saying 'oh my favourite' and turned and walked away at his tournament in NP on the weekend. Says alot really

I think that, contrary to the claims by 95s, the Taranaki Daily News is providing excellent coverage of Stratford Speedway. You would be hard-pressed to find equal coverage anywhere. Here's what the paper has published so far this season: 17 Oct news story 'Looking to Heavens' (rain prevents practice) and opening night preview; 3 Nov report of opening night, full results, 2 pix; 7 Nov preview Taranaki stock car champs; 10 Nov Bizarre run off finish, full results, 1 pic; 17 Nov Ministocks champ report, results, 1 pic; 24 Nov saloon champs report, results, 1 pic; 4 Dec midget car series preview, 1 pic; 7 Dec news story of Luscombe crash, 1 pic; 8 Dec meeting report, results; 11 Dec Under 23 stock car champs preview; 14 Dec news story 'Speedway safety defended' lead story, half the back page, & dramatic pic; 15 Dec report of under 23 champs, full results. I hasten to add that most of these stories are headlined across 6 or 7 columns (i.e. they are not buried somewhere). The paper recognises that speedway is a major spectator sport, has high reader interest, is a significant advertiser, and thus has helped foster a strong working relationship with the local track. I note that the last Speedway NZ agm devoted some time to discussing the challenges of raising the sport's public profile and developing a marketing plan. Maybe Stratford is once again showing the way.

I would remind all the detractors that Taranaki's newspaper coverage of speedway was voted among the top three in the country (Best local media support category) by the speedway fraternity and its judges last season - evidenced by being a finalist at the New Zealand Speedway Awards. Someone must think it's pretty good.

Well I for one have been impressed with the coverage given .
Speedway has to accept that with more recognition there will be the odd bit of coverage they would rather not have.
Don't let the negatives outweigh the positives .

Good call Macgor - this is real news, and real news can be some of the best PR you can get.
Anyone interested, or with a passing interest in speedway, or even none at all will be attracted to the headline.
Then reading further into it will be stunned at the action that has been happening at the "bullring" in stratford, the last frontier of full contact motorsport where gladiators pyut there bodys on the line.
The, we get some positive statements from the president, about the significant investment in safety the club is undertaking to provide the best facilities to drivers in spectators, showing Straford speedway club is progressive, and wanting to lead the country with there advancements.
A great report, which is a good read, and full of some interesting information that may attract the casual punter to find out what the guts of all this action is.
Well done the Daily News - keep up the good support of the track.
ANd any chance to see the picture that was posted alongside the article?
