Is that the Mercedes V8 powered Sidewinder that had the Chev engine originally? Or maybe the Holden engine? Know of two Sidewinders wonder where the third is? Great concept the Sidewinder chassis, handles great, one wonders why it was discontinued, although later Gordge's are semi offset but different chassis style. Going to give my engine more cubes via the bore size as at 225 cu in it has a bit of a handicap, can acheive 248.3 cu in with some Ford piston sets I have aquired using 289 crank (2.870"). Does anyone know what the bore and stroke was when Simbo was racing it? Were the Gurney heads 2 valve or 4 valve?

Gurney Eagle heads were 2 valve. The Teeces in Nelson still have the late model 255 engine they ran for Cody a few seasons back.New block and you have an awesome engine.

The 255 engines had the 302 crankshaft with long conrods apparantly with it's own piston size, I'm of the thought stay with the 289 crankshaft and fit O/S 255 pistons (which I have) which should make a torquey engine that can rev well with my existing big valve heads. Did the Gurney heads have big valves?

i seen a side winder today in wanganui it was the secound one that was made And it looks mean aye . It is my cars sister car in Wanganui. I have been spending a fair bit of time on the Sidewinder since being put up the wall and have attempted to give it the original 13s look, and I think I have succeeded but with a modernistic aspect working with what I have at present . Looks pretty tough. Next winter am going to start restoring the Sidewinder back to original with independant torsion bar suspension and "A" top arms. Also going to make an original hood and locate an original Honda Civic style body, beleive a guy in Taranaki has the molds? Reason being is to establish with others a "Golden Oldies Historic Spaceframe Club"which will be cool. Any one else out there interested? Got to be old spaceframes restored to original appearance and older racers of couse. Will be raced on streetstock rules I believe like the Waikato Golden Oldies do.

so what actually happened to the original gurney engine?? No idea what happened to it? Or what specs it was as in did it have a 289 crank?, piston size and type, rods etc? Not sure if it had a complete Gurney engine as they were all aluminium from what I have researched so I would suspect cost wise it was a cast iron block, but then who knows? You would have to ask Keith Simpson or Murray Gordge that. Cushman Competition in the USA have Gurney Eagle parts and can supply enough bits to make a complete engine at a price. Asked for a price on a pair of heads and they were around $10,000 USA. Not sure if that was complete or a pair of bare heads? Didnt ask anymore questions.

Had a great weekend at Rangeveiw with the Waikato Golden Oldies, they are a great bunch. 13s Sidewinder went well. Saturday race 2 had an encounter with another car then into the wall face on, but nothing a bit of welding couldnt fix afterwards. Then race 3 on Sunday was involved in a major encounter resulting in a car rolling 360 degrees over and back on it's feet. No one harmed. Check out Golden Oldies Stockcar Facebook website and speedwaynz photo's for pictures and info. Attachments:
