For the first time this season, Stevie Walsh has stepped into a car and taken it to Victory Lane. Walsh reunited with his 2007 team, Aaron Drever Motorsport and ventured to Waikaraka Park in Auckland, New Zealand with their #9 Minisprint for the annual John Webster Memorial race.
"I only got the call up on thursday from Aaron and didnt hesitate to say YES! Alistair and Carl definately know how to put a winning race car together," Walsh said.
The talented Kiwi hadn't raced since May 2009, where he came 3rd in the Victorian Speedcar Title at Wangaratta in Australia.
With intermittent rain, the first heat could have ended in disaster for Walsh, as three cars were involved in an incident, luckily everyone got going again. Walsh ended up finishing 4th.
"It was a bit unfortunate at the start, the track was a bit wet on the pole line, so everyone was slipping and sliding. Once I got clear, I tried to run the leaders down, but couldn't do so. These winged cars are all about momentum and keeping them as straight as possible."
The track had dried for the second heat. Walsh started off the back row and came through to finish 3rd, accumulating enough points from his two heat races to start 3rd on the grid for the A main.
"I knew I had to get to the front ASAP and hold it flat until the end of the race," he said.
Walsh was nearly a victim of 'The Big Dipper' in turn one that caught a few cars out last week. "I knew the hole was there, I just didnt think it was that big."
The car lifted all 4 wheels off the ground. Walsh saved it and never looked back, taking victory ahead of former NZ champion Shaun Cooke. "This is a great result, not only for Aaron Drever Motorsport, but for myself as well."
Walsh has been working day and night on a deal to see him in a car at Western Springs for next year. "I'm 80% sure I can bring everything together." Walsh has not committed to a Midget or a Sprintcar program yet.
"There are a few different options available, so I need to find out what one will give me the best results." Walsh is the 1998 NZ Sprintcar rookie of the year and spent 3 seasons racing Sprintcars around the mid-west in America, including the world famous Knoxville Raceway. "I love the power of Sprintcars and alot more tracks are running them in NZ now."
Australian Speedcar fans will not forget Walsh, the 'King of Queensland' and the 2009 Queensland Speedcar Club Champion. "Midgets are fun, I love sliding them around." Walsh has never raced a Midget in NZ.
