Rotorua Easter weekend,
With me being back in the country full time Graham Hughes got hold of me on Facebook and told me there was space left for the Sunday night at Rotorua, so a quick call around some friends and I had a crew, and a big thank you to the Rotorua club for letting me put a late entry in,
After the unfortunate events at Huntly that led to a early finish the car did not need much prep to get it ready and with the Easter weather being great in the upper north island it was a quick trip down to paradise valley,
We drew grid 11 of 15 for the first race which suited me as I have had very little track time lately, a little cautious off the start led to moving back a few spaces but with some crashing and bashing going on mid pack I managed a 9th place finish, and the car felt pretty good,
We left it alone for the second heat which had our front draw, a good jump got us into 3rd straight away and I spent the race trying to close in on the 29B, although I only got close a couple of times the car started to go off near the end as the track slicked off, a 3rd place finish was there,
We tightened the car up a lot for the last one which we were off grid 9, I got off to a flyer and got up the inside of the 5r car and picked off another couple as well, near the end Brent McClymont in the 2nz car got us around the outside of turn 4, but a 6th place finish in this one gave us 4th equal overall, my best finish in a meeting in 4 and a bit seasons, I also won the best pairs with local driver 371r Shane Dorrell, which I was very happy with,
both Shane and I drive cars that have been advertised on here for under 20K, I have read on here about Saloon’s among other classes getting prices out of the market but both of us were very competitive on the weekend, I think people look at what some people spend and think you need to do that to be competitive, but in the end if you can set up your car well you will have a heap of fun in this grade, and be very competitive while having a hell of a good time doing it
The best thing about racing a saloon for the last 4 or so years is the fellow competitors and crews I have got to meet, to hear their applause when I went up to get the prize for the best pairs was awesome, that’s the best thing I have got out of racing this class, is the quality of people I have got to meet, thanks everyone, if anyone is interested in moving to this grade I can fully recommend it, you will meet some of the most genuine people around,
I hope to get to race the BOP champs in a couple of weeks,
Cheers all,
Scott Wilkins
