I see some people are using those Yokohama "rally" type tyres which as per the rules would be illegal but people are getting away with it.
Does it really depend on perception of the groove pattern as to what would be "legal" or not?
I would like to use Dunlop rally tyres which tread is less than 10mm width but these would be deemed as racing tyres and therefore illegal.
Your thoughts or experiences please.

If the tread is no more than 10mm deep x 10mm wide and the tyre has a dot rating then they are ok to use

Rally tyres are DOT rated as they have to be used on the road touring stages between the competition stages. A lot of the different patterns comply with stock car rules, the only thing that you need to be careful about is the duro rating as top end rally tyres are designed to wear out in 40-50k's.
Then again, when was the last time that you have seen SNZ duro rate a tyre?

Also if it has "for competition use only" on it ;it is definitely illegal and cannot be used

I think you will find that they will say recomended for competition use only on most, we had a car turn up at WP with dot rated Hoozers on a stockcar witch was protested and the drivers were told that because they were dot rated they were allowed

I thought duro ratings only applied to superstocks. Not stockcars because they use road tyres.

I think you'll find that stockcar (std) tyres have to duro at 120 or more, to stop the DOT rated pure race tyres being used. IE Hoosier autocrossers, bridgestone RE86R, Yoko A008r etc

Just checked my rule book (yellow one) and in the stockcar rules there is NO mention of Duro ratings. Earlier in the Superstock rules it says when using standard road tyres, front or rear, they must duro 55 or higher.

Cool, that means that you can run any DOT approved road tyre as long as it meets the tread pattern rule!!!

Earlier in the Superstock rules it says when using standard road tyres, front or rear, they must duro 55 or higher. rule t12-2-1 a states "all rules are to be read in conjuction with the super stock specifications". so all superstock rules apply to stockcars unless the stockcar rules say otherwise.
