i have read the article several times. it is true that it is one sided perspective and does not address the whole issue other than that. nothing new was brought forward and many questions remained unanswered or not approached. the one thing that stands out is the rees camp is in full agreement with me is that palmy officialdom is a farce, biased and self indulgent. on this occasion the rees camp find themselves at odds with the decision making this time not going as they have demanded. they have held the promotion to ransom and have been heartened that they have not buckled to pander to one man. the sport is bigger than just one man......... the other parties have kept there heads down, not seeking self promotion and that is to be admired. the issue was dealt with on the night and for some that is where it needs to be left. there shall be some interesting dynamics in palmy next season with the mix of p and ex p contracted drivers. that may prove entertaining for a while but may be the catalyst for the downfall of the club/promotion. gizzy may benefit in the short term, but it remains to be seen if they can capitalise or maintain the benefits once the party has left the town. as eluded to before, the one positive to look forward to next season is the change in loyalties/dynamics on track with the door ajar for any non p driver no longer having to contend with the palmy stronghold. a chance for others to step up and become hero's or stamp their authority on a a new change of guard. Buster bell, I am disappointed in your comments re PN Officials being a farce. I have been a official of SNZ for 10 years and four of them at a senior level nationally refereeing championships in christchurch,Stratford, waikakara park, Wanganui, wellington and PN. I am also the referee that PR is referring about, I have raced against him in the early 2000's and am a assistant referee at PN Speedway every week. I can assure you there is no farce, no pre judgement no hate tread towards any competitor at PN speedway which includes the Rees family. Just to let you know that I am also the 2nd SNZ official that officiates at the superstocks teams champs. We are more than fair with all competitors as being a ex competitor a trip to the refs box is less than ideal. We are not there to be militarian dictator rather than foster the sport in what you can or can't do within the rules. Busterbell Have you ever raced at PN?, done a NZ championship, Grand Prix, teams champs as if you have im sure you would know who I am. I am available to talk at any time so if you want to you can contact me via a Google search or PN Speedway as I'm happy to chat. BB I am also disappointed in yourself not getting the other side of your story as there are several items in your story that are infactual. Maybe we can catch up at the awards dinner/ AGM and we can discuss this. Regards Ross ross you may be disappointed but my opinion is far more civil than what is heard walking round the streets of palmy at teams weekend. from locals and non locals i might add. most have witnessed a peculiarity that occurs almost every teams event in palmy consistently more so than any other venue or event. no i have not met you personally but would have witnessed you race and/or may have heard you at a drivers meeting. my comments are general, i do not single out any one official. the odd stuff has been happening long before your stint as an official. as for what has occurred particular to this thread it should have been kept between competitor and official but are fully aware how influence is used within the sport. every year i get a little more tempted to get up into a refs box as an observer to see just what goes on. (i can feel the local refs cringing already lol ) i need to understand why they are not seeing what i and many others are seeing.

Regards Ross You may be right Ross, but there were two things that dictated the story remain as it was, which is an interview with one person (and therefore their thoughts, opinion and feelings over what happened). One, I didn't really want it to become a he said, she said, but more importantly it took me 10 weeks to get it that far due to my own circumstances. Had I of interviewed everybody concerned in wouldn't have been complete until the 2016 AGM. I'll see you at the 2015 one however.... Barry B

Barry I am astounded that you would bother to be involved in this fiasco..not only is your article unfactual it must put you in a very tentative position as you are on the promotion committee for SNZ. It has been indicated in your article that the officials at P.North have acted improper and SNZ have supported them..Really no one is bigger than the sport. You would have been more proactive if you had picked up Peter Rees toys and put them back in his toybox, and everyone could have moved on Ian Easton referee P.North (been involved in speedway since 1969)

You would have been more proactive if you had picked up Peter Rees toys and put them back in his toybox, and everyone could have moved on Ian Easton referee P.North (been involved in speedway since 1969) Hi Ian. Firstly, the interview was conducted some weeks before I was ever approached about having an involvement with the Promo team. Secondly, I guess for those involved with Palmy on a week by week basis, and therefore being involved directly with some of what's gone down, they may see this as a "fiasco". For many of the rest of us around the country, and that likely includes about 90% of NZDTR readers, we were left wondering what on earth was going on, especially as it involved one of the sport's highest profile drivers. People had been asking both what had happened and what was happening next, including next year. The obvious thing to do was interview the person at the centre of it all, as the magazine should be keeping readers updated on all happenings within speedway regardless. We want to be able to look back through them, in years, in decades to come, and say "ah, that's when that happened". Whether toy throwing has taken place is for others to decide. It's quite clear in the article who is saying what, and nowhere have I said anything detrimental towards SNZ or its officials. As for being "unfactual"' I have relayed the feelings of the person concerned word for word. Whether he has got some of those things wrong I cannot really answer, but his feelings are his feelings. As the interviewer I would censor out any unsavoury language if that had been used, which it wasn't, but it's not really my job to censor the "opinion" of any subject I interview, is it? You imagine what the mainstream media would have done with this story, if they were remotely interested in speedway. Sometimes I think it's just as well we are a well kept secret.... Barry B (hadn't even heard of speedway in 1969).

Buster only complains about the refrees at Palmy when the Tigers cop another spanking .. lol.. That aside , great job done Barry Brown , and hats off to the Rees Family . Like they say theres more to speedway than just Palmy .. The Rees will have the final say on this matter , remember it isn't them who will continue looking in their mirrors or wondering what event to attend in fear of copping the payback which will always be on the Rees mind . It will just be a matter of which one its coming from ... Fun times ahead I would say.. Who was it that pulled out of teams champs? the hardest and most brutal meeting of the season, who was it that chose to go register with a track that didn't have super stocks racing on their current seasons programme?

Just so I could gain perspective on this topic I have tracked down a copy of the magazine and while I can understand why Ian and Ross feel slighted really this was an interview with one person and a record of his words of what went down from his perspective.
Barry didn't pen an investigative article about that incident and the aftermath, that would have been a different kettle of fish entirely.
I would suggest the editor of the magazine should have offered the other involved parties a chance to respond in the same issue and that is where your angst should be directed. Perhaps belatedly you will offered that chance in the next issue but really the whole sorry saga needs consigning to last season asap.
For the record and purely as an observer I thought the decision making and punishment was ok re that incident given the history of the driver , the reasons offered and the racing environment at that time.
I just wish I was hearing more about how the problems of dealing with sunstrike were going to be tackled. I still favour flashing green lights once the leader has won.

You're right Gordon. Without 36 cars on track and without sun strike things overall would likely have been quite different today.
To be fair to the magazine I'd already missed two issues with the interview, and only just made deadline on this one. There wasn't much in the way of spare time to obtain any other comments unfortunately.

why was the question not forwarded of what exactly was it that the rees camp wanted? the article explains they were unhappy with the punishment, and unhappy with the officials justification for that. it sounds to me they then set about trying to manipulate the promotion to influence the officials in a more suited to them outcome. does none of this scream corruption to anyone??

Personally I saw nothing wrong with the article posted in the Dirt track mag and good on Barry Brown for doing this . Rees Family have a huge following in speedway and it was good putting it out there for all to see . Peter Rees has more than explained in the article of their reasons behind pulling out of Palmy and registering elsewhere . Most will accept their reason behind it rather than picking holes in them . To see the huge following of the Rees Team at Rotorua Teams showed that they never lost an inch of support . It may be sour grapes for a few people because they pulled out of Palmy , but what they are doing for a little track like Gisborne has to be admired ..

That could only be a good thing for the sport and if rumours are correct about the new promotion for Meaanee Speedway it is a certainty that will happen . Which will even up the playing field a bit...
