It would be good if contributors citing historical opinions could link to something to backup their statements. Having recently been to the home of Abraham Lincoln some of what is being said is in contradiction to what I learnt. I'm not saying your wrong I just want to see some evidence regarding some of the statements being made. There is some information on Wikipedia on Slavery in the USA en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_the_United_States , the American Civil War en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War and the flag in question en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America#Confederate_flagPersonally, I wouldn't feel comfortable waving the flag myself but I have a closer relationship to the USA than many New Zealanders and I wouldn't campaign to stop someone else from waving the flag. Not that it's an issue for me as the chances of me supporting the Rotorua Rebels are approximately nil.

Personally I find the silver fern 'ageist'. Couldn't be any more blatant if we started waving flags with zimmer frames, dentures and bingo cards on them.

like all racial issues, it depends to which side you sit as how you interpret things. many will be aware racial tension has been flamed in america for year or two now for the sole purpose of unrest. perhaps rather than handle a hot potato, the club could create a opportunity to adopt a new emblem that represents their team. my point is the insignia is not relevant to this country nor is it representative in any way. be a great community project to create something unique to the region. if the situation develops (in the usa) into something more significant (which is the intention) it may well be diligent to consider other options. oh and regardless what my team uses to represent them they are still my team and i will support them unconditionally!

so what could the new Rotorua team name be? Rats Rabbits Rottweilers Raccoons can't be Raccoons cause that would get shortened to you know what then next thing they would be calling for that to be banned. On the subject of the confederate flag. The quickest way for something to be held up and proudly displayed as a symbol of hate is to tell ppl that's what it is. I have seen it proudly flown as a symbol of pride many many times and race would never have come into it. Ya know what? This seems like the perfect op to share a couple of tunes by one of my fav Hick Hop bands The Jawga Boyz Enjoy!!!

I read some of these comments and think.....have some of you actually gone NUTS....are there not more important things in your lives or the lives of your friends and family for you to focus on...YES there is..... a flag is not the cause of the latest GUN issue in USA ...the bloody nutter with the gun was....what the hell has this got to do with the Rotorua Rebels Stockcar Team and whether they continue to wave their flag at teams racing events, oh sorry the Panthers can't be called Panthers anymore...why?... oh Panthers are black and that might be taken as racist......if you want to think things through to the extreme...then we will all be in a bubble not doing anything because it is going to offend sometime else...my answer to you all is...GET REAL...put this in perspective...what's important in your life. Loving your family and friends, hopefully being healthy, getting the most out of life while you can...please close this thread, it is just ridiculous.

The "Black Panthers" were a terrorist group, if I remember correctly. So there goes Palmy.

Calm the farm everyone, its a discussion board and its the off season, obviously some unusual topics will come up and in light of whats happened in America with the spotlight on the Confederate flag I think it is a fair topic to discuss. When money hungry corporates like Walmart and Amazon are removing it from their shelves its not an over-reaction. In little old NZ, the question is whether people here will have the same reaction to that flag or not and when one of our high profile clubs uses it as a 'branding' of sorts its interesting to see what everyone thinks. Lets not get personal and demand the thread be shut down because you don't like it.

Nothing personal at all Greg....we all have opinions and I voiced mine , I don't expect people to agree but what I pen is not personal to anyone it is my observation...same as you have....more important things to worry about in NZ than whether the Rebels team should stop using the Rebels/Confederate flag because of political issues overseas. It is all way out of proportion.

I do and will continue to wave the Flag with pride as a true REBEL and RASCAL supporter, does this make me racist?? Hell No!! there is nothing you can do in this over PC world that wont offend someone if you look hard enough. people need to stop playing the victim and get on with life. Maybe the people in this world who still find them selves offended by history, a generation they played no part in, a world that was very different to today!! maybe they are the ones that need to take along hard look in the mirror?? because depending on what side of the fence you sit the view is very different and we need to stop and take a look from both sides before commenting, maybe those that don't are not the victims but are the true racists?? can we really hold the current generation to ransom over events in history?? common sense would say no!!!

Whoa Back up,, seeing people get shot-killed because of a racially motivated attack in a part of the city-state that fly's a flag that was designed for-during a racial movement is a pretty big important thing in people’s lives I would think! Unfortunately this is the same flag flown by the Rotorua Rebels. The question people will be asking is why did they choose to fly-adopt this same flag?

The Rebels have flown that flag from the early 80s possibly before that too. this controversy is fairly recent {aside from those kkk morons parading around in bedsheets and assuming they are the mutts nutts because they look white.... everyone is white when you are all covered in white bedsheets!} I think a better question is - why do people blame racial attacks on a colored bit of fabric rather than the attitudes and perceptions of the people who committed the actual attack? Its like saying Guns kill people - well they do but someone has to fire it, it cant do it on its own!

Oh and BeachBoy - it was designed for a specific army, not even the whole movement, during a CIVIL WAR by the side that FREED SLAVES AND "BLACK PEOPLE" FIRST. Jeez - do a little research will ya?
