Best bang for buck would be for the council to invest in Waikaraka, otherwise they'll invest whatever amount into Colin Dale (or where ever) and still have to spend money on Waikaraka anyway.
There's no point in having two competing Speedways in Auckland, we are not big enough, especially when they run against each other, I'm sure both promotions would enjoy more patrons at a combined venue.
A lot of backwards thinking going on and not future proofing where we can race.

Fair call, but it would be like suggesting to build a third track there... pointless, when there's already two there, in this case, there's already one there. As others have pointed out, council is better off spending money to modify a venue to suit, than have 2 venues that do the same thing. And that venue would be under their control and not split.

Also Ashburton less than an hour down the road as well.

Correct, but Chch isn’t planning to build a speedway though... or spending rate payers $$$ to build it, when there is one already there for redevelopment.

Statistics are not issue with this particular article, what in fact gone on behind closed doors which is of more relevance to this. What also should be noted is that the Council have been suckered into a deal with Springs Promotion who have lead Council to believe they have the absolute rights to the speedway classes they run, when in fact if the competitors chose not to licence with SPL they would have nothing. Some years ago a group of sidecar competitors, tired of the promoter at the Springs, broke away, the result being Waikaraka Park were granted a licence to run sidecars as well. Its not impossible for a similar scenario to happen again given the right circumstances which would leave SPL and the council where? One day the competitors at Western Springs will wake up and realise that they have some power. I guess at the moment they are happy someone with deep pockets is bankrolling the deal. No promoter under the current framework of SNZ is guaranteed anything more than one season at a time and for the Council to be party to a long term lease with a promoter under these circumstances is foolish. The conditions of any lease to protect each parties investment will be nigh on impossible to formulate. I personally think Bill Buckley is foolish to invest money into this project with no long term guarantee, but he's a lot smarter than me so who knows. Did not take long for the sidecars to move on and race at a new venue ,your Club doesnt even seem to remember the Mark Goodyear memorial any more ,but remembers those who it wishers too ...

The side cars were like the 6 shooters. They came out on the track and everyone either went to get food or go to the toilet. The only people interested in them were family or friends of the drivers.

The move to a brand new facility that is purpose built for Midgets Sprintcars TQs, F2’’s, Super Saloons and Wingless Sprintcars would be good. Running for good money and not a hashed up re jig of a defunct stadium.
No difference than Mt Smart being the new home of league over Carlaw Park.
A fantastic museum as a tribute to the Springs would be cool.
Ideally we would love to stay where we are but that is no longer an option

Not sure if you are speaking for the organisation, or just a slip of the tongue beginning to give the game away there Drever....
Wingless Sprint Cars..... Super Saloons...?! Are you sure you don't want the Modifieds as well and see Council shut down Wacky Park for good as part of the deal?
As the saying goes, you can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter as much as you like. Your deal stinks no matter how sparkly you want to make it.

I was meaning it would be a better suited track nice and wide and it was only my opinion.
Waikaraka will always be home to stockcars and so it should be

Nothing will be done in time. So mite need to all change to H or M as opposed to running an A.

Wiakaraka is the home of stockcars, super stocks, saloons, super saloons, modifieds, street stocks, six shooters, mini stocks and mini sprints. 9 classes of speedway racing in Auckland who already have a wide track with a superior racing surface. It has been the home of saloon car racing since 1970.
Yes the facilities are run down, and yes the spectator numbers have dropped while the grandstand has been closed. But the competitor numbers continue to grow in every class. There is a reason for that which will be lost on people looking to take advantage of others for personal gain.
You need to understand why anyone would even bother to go to a show at WP in the state it is in, and why competitor numbers continue to grow. You need to understand the value of 50 years of competitors having control of their own sport and a governance structure that is answerable to the competitors. And you need to understand just how much top end financial growth is available to the competitors with just a small investment into WP.
But that takes people with a long term view and a collective interest in seeing decent returns to the sport and all competitors, not their own pockets or pay cheques.

So you're complaining about the council spending your rates on speedway. And an individual planning to match that dollar for dollar? I swear some of these people would cut their nose of to spite their face. I’m beginning to think some of these people who want to stay at Western springs also think they could get back to 18 meetings a year at the springs if the “right people” were in charge. Get real. New location, 20 meetings a year plus three practices, better parking for competitors and fans, brand new facilities. Understand personalities can upset people but man what an opportunity. My question is does the 15 million from council include the land, or is that on top of the land provided? Can’t wait to see some more plans

It was a never ending battle at Springs with the council.
I think I read somewhere that the RFA will be paying $5mill or so & AKL Council with be paying another $5mill & then Buckly will be paying the rest.
Also they said they will be able to do Endurance races & have the stops like Knoxville Nationals! I'm sure Waikaraka will be given money for upgrades

the opportunity for speedway with a new venue going forward is massive for the sport i cant help thinking that keeping 1 or two meetings as special history meetings like the 50 lapper at the springs in that christmas period wouldnt hurt, this would neccessitate springs to be left "as is" which may not be an option

While not referring specifically to any one aspect of either of the two promotions in Auckland, the benefits of a single jointly run facility over two separate tracks is considerable, and if you really wanted to grow the sport as a whole (both via competitor growth and attendance) then its time to look past the old loyalties (or rivalries) and put heads together on a business case for a combined facility. A combined facility could run every weekend of the summer, meaning no loss of racing opportunities compared to the present situation, and probably increased opportunity. Permanent staff could be employed (eg track preparation) and more capable machinery used to give a higher quality racing surface. Rainouts would be easier to accommodate and have less impact on the bottom line. Promotion would be much easier and consistent, and with a bigger budget would have a greater reach. It would be easier to tailor "club night" meetings aimed at competitor needs and easier to put on high value crowd-pleasing nights with a card full of glamour classes. Pretty much every aspect of the track operation would benefit from the greater budget and increased frequency of events. By using multiple part-timers/volunteers you can cover absences more easily, and ensure best practice in all the back-end stuff. So long as you have the resource consent to run the number of meetings you need to turn a profit and meet competitors needs (and now is perhaps the one golden opportunity Aucklanders have to secure this), I dont see how two semi-competing venues can ever be as effective as a single combined facility.

So you're complaining about the council spending your rates on speedway. wtf? where did you get that from? I am happy anybody spends money on speedway. What I said (and seemed pretty obvious) is Christchurch manages to have 5 speedway tracks with a fraction of the population of Auckland and yet some posters in this site seem to think Auckland is too small a population to manage 3 (Rosebank, Waikaraka and Western Springs/?) Also those are all club run tracks with little or no council funding.
