Wanganui Stockcar and Speedway Club held its Annual General Meeting this morning. During the meeting, retiring club president Daryl James announced that the naming rights sponsor for the New Zealand Superstocks in January will be Elite Mechanical and Engineering Limited. The event will be known as the Elite Mechanical New Zealand Superstock Championship. Elite Mechanical is owned and run by Mike Mooney, son of Evan and brother of Dion. Elite has been a great supporter of speedway in Wanganui over the last few years, and many Wanganui competitors carry Elite signage on their cars. Mike has previously sponsored the Elite Stockcar Series at Oceanview Family Speedway. Another of Mike's businesses, Steam and Machinery Limited, will sponsor the second tier championship. The WSSC is delighted to have a local naming rights sponsor. Planning for the Elite Mechanical NZ Superstocks is already well underway, with entry forms not too far away, and advance ticket sales to be announced in the not-too-distant future. The Elite Mechanical NZ Superstocks Facebook page was launched earlier today, and a website and Instagram, page will follow. The Superstock class at Wanganui is on the up and up, and we expect a lot of out-of-town cars to turn up to race in the early part of the season. It's going to be a massive season at the Oval by the Ocean!

There's been a lot happening behind the scene over the last few months, and promotion of the Elite Mechanical New Zealand Superstock Championship is about to ramp up. Head to the event Facebook page to keep up with all the news. There'll be a website up and running very soon, the first batch of reserved tickets goes on sale on Thursday this week (Bucket seating at the top of the Turn 1/2 bank), and for drivers, the entry form will be out soon. In the meantime, if you're driving around Wanganui, you're likely to see this sign out and about, and our good friends at Brian FM are already running advertisements. January 3rd and 4th will be here before we know it, and this is one event you won't want to miss!

Regarding the ticket sales on Thursday, the time they are planned to go on sale (9 a.m.) is probably not the most convenient time for many to be able to book on-line. I know that it seems to be the normal time for ticket launches but doesn't really give everyone a fair crack, particularly workers who may only have a mobile phone available and the luxury to drop tools and stop what they're doing. I was fortunate not to be working when the teams champs went on sale, so am hoping sales are slow so I can get my tickets Is there a particular company they are being sold through? (e.g Tiketek) I do understand that there's always going to be some not happy whatever time was decided to launch. Good luck to Wh.... Wa... Oceanview, hope there is a good response to reserved ticket sales, I'm a great believer in these being available.

Naturally I was looking at it from my point of view, but did mention if you care to read the whole post that there probably wasn't a time that wouldn't suit everybody.

And in the meantime, check out this cool promotional video that Jase and the team from The Pits Media has put together for us.
The Pits will be live-streaming the Elite Mechanical NZ Superstocks for anyone that can't make it; more details on that a little nearer the event!

Awesome Tony and thanks for the updates.
How many people do Oceanveiw Speedway at Whanganui think you can fit into the facility?
I’m picking it’s going to be quite full given it’s situated between the two biggest superstock tracks in the country in Palmerston North and Stratford.
That’s 50 competitors and heaps of Fans alone.
Would 7000 people fit into the arena?

Would 7000 people fit into the arena? With 1200 extra seats in place, we could probably accommodate 10,000, although it would be a tight fit. If we get 8000 each night, we'll be over the moon. As far as cars go, we'd expect more than 100. There were over 100 at Rotorua for the World 240's last season. We ran on the Sunday night with 17 Superstocks, none of which had raced at Rotorua, plus there were probably an additional ten Stratford cars that didn't race anywhere that weekend.

I understand that the iconic 432V car will get put to good use over the weekend as a tribute to Charlie Berntsen, who of course won the first New Zealand Stockcar Championship held at Oceanview. The Wanganui season gets underway on the Sunday of Labour Weekend, 27th October. There was a great turnout at the Club's first driver sign-up last night, and I heard that already 18 Superstocks have indicated their intention to be at Wanganui that night including the Wade Racing and Mukka Motorsport teams.

A good line-up of Wanganui cars at the Rotary club Kite Day on Sunday. 52V is the ex-Josh Lockett Rees Spank (52W) but will run out of Oceanview this season as 10V, in the hands of a new driver to the class. The black car belongs to Mark Johnston, who had a season off but will be back in action this season along with a number of Stockcar drivers not seen last year including Jason Wright (new Rees Spank), Trevor Greig, Francis Potaka and Gerry Linklater. Shaun Smith's 53V Superstock has been race-ready for a month now, and is promoting the Elite Mechanical NZ Superstocks. The SS Motorsport team will comprise four cars this season, with the cars of Carl Burns and Hayden Green (ex-Dykstra spaceframe) ready to go to the signwriter, and Max Holloway's brand new Superstock completed. Oceanview's season calendar should be confirmed by SNZ in the next couple of days, but the season is scheduled to start on Sunday 27th October (Labour Weekend), and already 18 Superstocks including the Wade Racing and Mukka Motorsport teams have said they will be there. In four months today we will crown the 2019-20 1NZ, and it can't come soon enough!

From the Elite Mechanical NZ Superstock Championship Facebook page: Here's a notice to all drivers intending entering the Elite Mechanical New Zealand Superstock Championship for 2019-20.
The entry form for the event has been approved by Speedway New Zealand, and will be available by the end of this week. It can be downloaded from a link to be posted at this page, or from the event website - www.oceanviewspeedway.co.nz/nz-superstock-championship
We've also had a number of enquiries about tickets for competitors. All entrants will receive two free tickets to the event, plus the opportunity to purchase a further two tickets at the discounted price of $20 each. You can order these tickets when you return your completed entry form.
We will post again as soon as the entry form is online and available.

Will scrutineering be done at the track or in the city like the old days Tony ?
Also, will there be reserved seating on the back straight ? I can't find a map of what seating is available..

Will scrutineering be done at the track or in the city like the old days Tony ? Also, will there be reserved seating on the back straight ? I can't find a map of what seating is available.. Scrutineering will be at the Wanganui Racecourse, in town. Details will be on the entry form. The only reserved seating on sale at the moment is at the top of the bank on Turns 1/2; see the photo below. That has been selling steadily, and is around 2/3rds sold. We have an option for reserved seating on the back straight, but have yet to make a final decision on whether we will go with that. For crews, there will be a reserved area adjacent to the pits for crews to come and go, and watch their car race. It is not intended though as an area where people can park themselves for the whole meeting! There's a heck of a lot of work going on behind the scenes, and a lot of people involved in what will be an fantastic event. It's awesome to be on the inside, watching it all come together.
