It is with a heavy heart that we are posting that Barry Hunter Snr has passed away peacefully this morning. Barry was a larger than life character and the consummate entertainer on and off the track, those of us that can remember that far back, will never forget those Elvis impersonations, they were second to none. A proud Rotorua Rebel and NZ Superstock Champ were just a small portion of the accolades he earned during his illustrious racing career. He was also an innovator when it came to constructing the latest cars, which incorporated all the latest technology of the day, and it has to be said was one of the greatest competitors the sport has ever had. In recent years, even though not keeping the best of health, Barry would still be at the track offering his expertise to the younger Hunter Whanau now racing and everybody who would ask for it. He will be sorely missed by all of us. All our love to the Hunter Whanau at this time. Na reira e te rangatira e Barry. Haere, haere, haere atu ra. Moe mai ra.

A great teams racer, hard charger, and an entertainer.
Very sad news, aroha to the Hunter Whanau
He was always a savy purchaser of racecars.
I can think of three of the hot rods of their Generation that he purchased and raced to great affect.
The first Tony MAC bullet from Bryce Penn in the early 80s.
The hot rod Kuriger above that took 2 NZ titles, the first with builder Paul Wade.
And of course the Murray Hobbes pro action rocket.
Will find some photos in MIA soon to post.
Despite the Hot rods above I always think of the blue chassis 38r built out of Rotorua that he drove the wheels off and cemented his reputation as a teams racer.

Kua hinga te tōtara i Te Waonui a Tāne. "The mighty Totara which fell today has been heard and felt by many. That Totara is you – strong and splendid, you had the breadth and depth to 'think beyond' the canopy. To plot and plan a direction (complete with a pointy bit) slowly but surely just like the Totoara."

Surely a good case could be argued for the retirement of the 38R number.

A sad day indeed. Was a legend in so many ways. That 138r car with that pro action engine was something to behold. Was beautiful indeed.
Not to say RBS engine wasn't good, won him title from memory, just a different era.
Was a super guy to be around. Massive family man. Think the hunters still reside on that road up to pvr. Used to see the logging truck and racecar on the berm there whenever we were in town.
Sad we have lost Clark and Barry now. They had some super races with each other over the years.
RIP BAZ
