whose old enough to remember when Bruce penhall double world solo champion raced at western springs speedway. had one the best motorcyle solo series with names like Bobby Schwartz, late kenny carter of England. from Australia Billy Sanders and Gary guglielmi. along with kiwi riders Maugger, Bargh, Ross, pendlebury, shirra, Goodall and Fullerton.
Penhall was this young blonde American from costa mesa, california. he was beaten on the night by Carter of England who broke 4 laps record stood for years by Ivan Mauger who was his protegee. Penhall ended up in Chips American cop show for couple season. me personally i recall Carter smashing 4 laps record from 1m9.2secs to 1m8.3 secs. was just before they changed the track .

Those were great days of Western Springs when they had the banking in the corners and big international meetings with the bikes and midgets,I think that meeting with Bruce Penhall was in the 81/82 season,🙂

I'm old enough..but didn't get to see that meeting . But I do recall the Mauger 1m9.2s one. Australasian Final...exact year escapes me.. but Sanders and Mauger were the hot favurites. Both had horror luck with the odd fall, mech failures and just off the pace. Ended up they were tied for the last spot to go on to the next round of the World Champs qualifying. Mauger totally aced it...that 1m 9.2 was unheard of pace at the time. One of the best rides I've seen...if not the best. Great days alright.

At guess i think was 1976 or 77 from memory i wasnt going speedway recall seeing track record in old program. old record you saw 1m9.2secs one of those where just unbelievable time. took about 5 years for it be bettered by Englands Kenny Carter. who sadly took his own life.. few years later . irony was that Mauger was his mentor, was pretty cool. back then i think penhall won 2 consecutive world titles USA 1981 then at Wembley year after.
