Stratford Scrappers legend "Dr" John Mercer passed away on Thursday, having been sick for some time. John was part of a fearsome Stratford Scrappers team in the 1980's, and was an uncompromising teams racer. Clashes in that era with the Panthers were always looked forward to, and for a period, Stratford seemed unbeatable, with much of that being down to John's influence. The Scrappers raced hard then played hard later, and John was never far from the action. In later years he wrote the "Country GP" column in NZDTR, and you were never in any doubt as to his opinion! John was also a member of the Superstocks Teams Champs Hall of Fame, a well-deserved honour. Sincere condolences to John's family, and his many friends in the speedway fraternity.
