It's going to be a massive night at Fast Lane Spares Oceanview Family Speedway on Saturday night as we close out the season with our traditional Memorial Night. Superstocks take top billing, with 20 cars already entered and more expected. It's the West Coast Superstocks, and each of the three heats will also be a Memorial race to "Mad Noel" Kensington, George Podjursky and Craig Heibner respectively. It's a quality field with 1NZ and 3NZ entered, plus Peter Rees, Ethan Rees, Gavin Taniwha, Regan O'Brien, Brett "Bundy" Hislop and more, plus a strong field of locals including Vulcans Stockcar driver Callum Sturzaker having a play in Mitch Vickery's 26K. Stockcars are racing for The Charlie in memory of the late "Big Bad" Charlie Berntsen. The club has already had to raise the field limit from 30 to 52 cars, and as always, the locals will pull out all stops to make sure The Charlie stays in Wanganui. An interesting addition to the field is Asher Rees in the 62P Gommans car. Youth Ministocks will race for the Heiby Memorial, and the growth locally has been such this season that V cars will outnumber visitors. The Sidecars will race for the Karl Barritt Memorial which is always fiercely contested, and Production Saloons will contest the Ray Purdy Memorial. Racing starts at the earlier time of 5pm, with pit gates open from 1.30pm and public gates opening at 3.30pm. Both the top gate and gates at the airport end will be open. Bring a picnic tea and enjoy a great night's racing as we bring down the curtain on one of Whanganui's most successful seasons in recent memory. Noel Kensington Two Wanganui 3NZ's (Tyler Hill photo)

Im reading the Charlie Bernsten book at the moment, quite interesting Charlie had that bad crash at the 1974 NZ Stockcar championship at Paradise Valley and missed 5 years of racing due to injuries, didnt get clearance to race again till 1979,pretty cool to end his career winning the 1982 NZ stockcar Championship at Wanganui at 43 years old and a 4th place at Te Marua in 1983.a real legend of the sport and a Panthers hero in the 70s as well, just a little bit of History.

Greame Mitchell RIP and Charlie RIP were good friends both on the track and off it ,can remember Charlie at Stratford ,charging across the pits on a tractor after an altercation on the track ,not to his liking .. Brendon Lucas ,can tell some good yarns that could not be written in the book about Charlie .

Charlie was actually going to race TQs when he started racing and was building one at the time but just as he was going to start racing Palmerston scraped the TQ class,he went up to Auckland to watch the Stockcars at Western Springs and thought this is a bit of me and started building one to race at the start of Stockcars at Palmy in the early 60,s, its hard to think of Big Bad Charlie racing a TQ 🙂

I was at Palmerston North Showgrounds the night Charlie had his run-in with Ray New and the local constabulary. Now that Ray New fella was a canny bastard, always looking for a way to make a fast buck. As I have got older and more cynical, I can't help but think it might all have been a very elaborate set-up. Whatever, that's when "Big Bad" Charlie was born, and he played the persona perfectly on and off the track. He was one of life's characters. And speaking of Brendon Lucas, he's having a skid on Saturday night in the Charlie, as 39V. That will be interesting!

39v will sound like the driver ,he has a habit of getting things back the front like the spark plug leads two laps tops before he heads infield and is known as DAISY Good seeing 88p back out there ,he might be able to get out of 1st gear if he doesnt get stuck behind 39v ...

The weather here couldn't be better; not a cloud in the sky and barely a breath of wind. If you're coming to Oceanview tonight though, bring warm clothes because it will cool down quickly.

We did about 40% of the wall last winter and the southern end now has a nice lip, plus it's a few inches taller. That will extend all the way around by next season so going up the wall will be easier!

Got to be a little easier on the body for the drivers, and adds to the spectacle for the punters. Barry B
