The Glen Free car ended up in the hands of a ChCh driver ,Neil(?) who kept the 14 as his number. Neil was a real tall quiet spoken guy who raced Saloons as well. Did real well in modifieds but his last name escapes me at the moment. Should remember as I raced against him enough Ray Jones's Rotary powered deal came down here at the same time in the hands of Steve Wichman(Hell I can remember HIS name!!) and there were photos of these two cars racing together at Ellesmere with the caption "Free and Jones racing at Ellesmere!!!"

Certainly some more interesting looking cars than the current ones. Are you able to tell us what years they where racing in?

about 1985/86 for the photos taken at Pamly, as I can see Ray Jones Black Monza in the background of the Brian Reid photo which was the year before he won the NZ title

The Ray Jones , Murray Gordge built modified is still alive and well in the hands of Brent Harris at Ohakea , I understand his son has been punting it around the track at Ohakea, Brent now intends to restore it as it is still 90% there less only the Monza body, It was the first car Murray built for a customer, and of course Ray won the New Zealand Championship at Palmerston North in that car. On the subject of Brian Reid I last saw him at Oildale (Bakersfield) Ca running a Camaro hobby stock about '96

Hi Auto Pete, I pit crewed for Neil for about 12 years, The old 14r car of Glen Free was brought by Neil Baldwin. Neil won the Modified Invasion in CHCH and also the South Island Modified champs in Cromwell in it probibly his most sucessful car. He is racing in the superstock grade next season as number 41c ( 14c already tacken ) in an old Wayne Wilding Chev V8 car.

Heres Neil and I in heated battle at the King of the Coast that year!! This close racing went on all day between us and I have never remembered to thank Neil for racing so fast and so clean compared to others down in the South who shall remain nameless!!! ;D
