If its the car I'm thinking of you may well be correct on it becoming 44A. Load the photos as soon as you can and we will help you out.

from YankeeClipper10H, photos of the 44A Stephen Richards car. From the 'Listener' advert for 'Fender Benders'. Stephen Richards on the left. 1986/87 on track. Photographer unknown. Was this a new car when Greg had it? Who built it? Where did it go after Stephen Richards?

Yes it was a new car when dad brought it (chassis only) and he finished it off. It was built by Toby Campbell in Hamilton. There were a few built sister car to the glenvial wines car(as raced by Toby Campbell)
Dad believes that it does look like his old car in the 44a picture. He would really love to know where it is and if it is still so called ALIVE
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there Amy, the 18h & 28h cars look very similar to the car raced here in Palmy by Alan (Bones) Burton from ~ 1978 - 1981ish. That was a sloper valiant & he won a heap of races with that car. I'll ask him where he got it from & where it went next time I see him, pretty sure it was from up north. The 44a car looks like a car that also ended up down here. That one owned by a part chinese bloke (can't recall his name) then on to Jac Easton? Good to see you guys down here again over the weekend, well done to you all - good weekend. Cheers, Brendan Lucas

Cheers, Brendan Lucas Time frame is wrong Brendan, the 18H/28R car is 99% certain to be the 44A car, and those 44A photos are from the 1986/87 period. Even the Bones car of 86/87 looks similar, but of course the car can't be two things at once. Ian Easton had an ex Kevin Free car that looked similar. Just to confuse everything, Toby Campbell built a few very similar cars in a short time frame and once they get to the third or more owner and rebodied it becomes difficult to trace them.

Hey there Mr PALLMALL, sorry to throw in the red herring. Just spoke with Bones, he told me he got his car off a Michael Coles, & thinks Michael got it of Dennis Davies. I think that being the case, there is a nice picture of the 'Bones' car (when Dennis owned it) angle parked over the fence where it was left overnight (I remember that, I was sitting were it went over) due to rain that night, in the Palmy speedway 25 years book. The other car I was talking about was in fact a Toby Campbell car. Jac said it was purchased as a track car for Palmy, driven by Peter woods, Gill Malia, then himself, then purchased by himself. He then stuck the Gurney into it before the Gurney ended up in the Alloy coupe thing he had. Jac said he sold that Toby Campell car to Colin Sue, then brought it back off Colin, only to dump the chassis at the Levin dump so there ends the legacy of that car. In the mean time, I didn't ask Bones who got took over the reins of his Toby Campbell clone? but if my memorie serves correct it may have gone to Paul Grant (51P) as his first car. I do have a photo of the Bones car but no idea how to scan etc., but it does look very similar. They had some good looking stockcars around those days! Cheers, BL

There were some real nice cars around that time, and interesting that a lot of ex Waikato and Auckland cars from the mid 70s to early 80s ended up in Palmy. Really hard to track history of most of them, be interesting to see what Porry's brains trust can come up with.
I will see what photos I can find of the cars mentioned, it may not help us with the fate of the subject car, but it should provide some interest.
Oh Porry, note that Greg's car was purchased from Toby as a bare chassis, which is why it isn't a V8 model.

My dad brought the bare chassis from Toby Campbell and built the car himself. HE raced the car at Forest Lake and Rotorua and was sponsored by Philip Sherley Motors!
If you look at the photos you will see Greg Pickerill is the driver.
Dad would just like to locate where the car went to after that, as this was the idea of this post.
Dad was wondering if anyone had 44a Stephen Richards number?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't worry about all the banter up above, it is surprising how many answers come out of debate like this. I have a half dozen people to talk to in the weekend who should be able to fill in many more details on the Richards car. None of them have computers, so stay tuned.

Elaine Barnett raced an ex Stephen Richards car as 74A (there is a thread down around page 7). Not sure if it is the same car rebodied with a cut down Zodiac MkIV body or not, will have to find some more photos to compare.
YankeeClipper10H, get your photo albums out.

Not sure if the issue of who built the car has been sorted out, but I have now established a bit more history. The car was purchased by Robbie Laing from Greg, for Steven Richards to drive. As seen in the earlier photos it retained the Austin body and only had a few changes to the front bars. It was then fitted with V8 power and a MkIV Zephyr/Zodiac body and a few more changes to some bar work, this would have been 87/88 season. After this it was sold minus engine to Elaine Barnett and run in B/C grade and eventually converted to the new Standard Stock rules. No idea if it was sold after this, but it was found at a scrap metal yard in Onehunga and saved from the crusher and purchased for the scrap value of $80 with the intention of restoration, and is currently still with this owner in Manurewa, South Auckland. It still has the Mk IV body. I think this photo is from dato32, off the Elaine Barnett thread. Steven Richards currently lives in Whangamata and Robbie Laing is in Hillsborough, Auckland. No contact name on the current owner, but should have it early next week.
