I go to speedway to watch racing and i am aware that part of that is breathing in dust and fumes from the cars, but you make that decision before you go.
What i am getting fed up with is not been able to get away from the smokers and breathing in their second hand smoke all night.
I was at the track (WG) on Wednesday night and found that we had two smokers in front of us 2 to right and 2-3 behind us and 1 on the left, what this meant for us was we might as well of been chain smoking all night, because as one finished their smoke the next one lit up.
Now don't get me wrong if they want to smoke thats up to them but i choose not too and would like to be able to sit in an area that is smoke free, i am not saying the whole arena, just parts of it.
What do other people think on this?

It doesn't matter where you go you always seem to sit down wind from a smoker I was impressed at the NZ super saloon at Island Park last season,we were sitting on the seats between turns 1 & 2 and people were actually leaving their seats and standing up the back by the fence to have a smoke away from where people were sitting.Something I've never seen before at a speedway meeting.Maybe us people in the south are a bit more considerate to the people around us.

I dont want the smokers to have to move, but to have an area where i know i can sit and not have the smoke. As it was pointed out you cant move away from the smoke and on nights when the arena is full (fireworks, titles etc) once you get your seat that's where you stay for the night.
What my fiance and his family were really impressed with was last night they went to Ruapuna and noticed that the people who were smoking went to the back of the arena and had there smoke and then came back and sat down.
Also in answer to the question isn't it illegal to smoke in sports arena's, no its not due to the fact that its open air, its something the clubs have to choose to do in the interest of the view public.

Good discussion you've bought up Dodge! I too would be in favour of a smokefree section. Being an asthmatic understandably I prefer to stay well away from smokers, unfortunately this is basically impossible at Woodford Glen unless I go and sit in my car in the carpark. No matter where you sit, there always seem to be a smoker blowing smoke in your direction. Yes I could move but how many times a night should I be expected to move? After getting our spot early for the NZ Superstock Champs we were then later on surrounded by smokers on all sides of us. Maybe these people could be considerate enough to move to the back of the crowd to have their smoke. People that had bought prepaid tickets (numbered seats) didn't have the option to move nor did they know that they would be sitting beside smokers. The best way to sort out this problem is to move with the times and create smokefree areas, considering that this is meant to be a family sport in a family focused arena.

Good topic.
On a slightly different track I was impressed in the pits at Stratford which are (tobacco) smoke free (more than enough racecar fumes to inhale ;D) and the officials in the pits make sure they stay that way.
Unfortunately at Western Springs the rules dont seem to be enforced. I kinda get nervous working between methanol and some idiot with a lit cigarette.

Good discussion Dodge. I too would be in favour of a "smoke-free area", although my preference would go to a "smokers section" rather than a smoke free area as smoking is something that at this day and age does not belong in public areas anyway (whether it is through law, rules or just plain common sence)

I have been annoyed with the smokers for some time now as I am also an asthmatic. I have been to a couple of small speedways in the states and they have a designated area for smokers/alcohol or some have a designated area for families i.e no alcohol allowed. I think this is a great idea then you can make the decision to inhale smoke and not have it forced upon you.

wow, if Woodford Glen ever put that in imagine the uproar? It was bad enough recently with the people that didnt think outside the square. I personally dont smoke & detest the 2nd hand smoke etc & think its a good idea but very doubt it will be introduced & enforced.

I to am in favour. recently we had a lot of smokers around us and at times it was uncomfortable. while at the same time my father would get up and go have his smoke by the back fence.away from everyone. If it was good enough for him then why cant most people do it ?

If a liquor ban can be enforced, then why can't a smokefree area be enforced? Surely the paid security guards that enforce the liquor rule and other rules too, could enforce this rule also. Surely it wouldn't be that hard. Smokers can still sit in the designated area if thats their favourite spot, but have to walk up the back to light up. maybe have their smoke when visiting the loo, shop etc. Maybe try trialling a smokefree area and see how well it is supported by the crowd. I'm sure you will be surprised by the amount of people that will want to sit there.
