Last night, before heading back to the 'upper island'' a chance to check out Ruapuna (hope that's the correct name!). Never been to Western Springs or just gone to watch Sprintcars and baby sprintcars before. Welcome to Ruapuna. That's how I felt when I saw the carpark layout, a tidy exterior and sealed entry (had just cleaned the borrowed car so this pleased me greatly). Can't remember what it cost to get in, must have been okay. Through the turnstyle and into the arena area ... if you're not impressed NOTHING will impress you. This place is tidy, good variety of excellent spectator viewing options, excellent safety fence - AND A TRACK that immediately says, "What a waste, where are the saloons!"If all this isn't enough so early on, through the fence I spy Jason Scott, WOW, somebody I know!!!!!!!!!!!! The pit area also immediately impressed and if it was good enough for Pete Sloman and newly crowned Super Saloon 3NZ Dennis Bolt, it must be good enough for me! ... and then, knock me down with a feather, TEAM FLAMECRUSHER [/color][/i]... tinypic.com/view.php?pic=30keq91&s=5The racing gets underway with a North vs South couple of heats, the North winning by a narrow margin. The ploy of putting Kerri-anne James in the North team certainly distracts the opposition. All those of the pit side eat dust and get showered on track debri - must be at speedway! The racing is fast and furious with little damage and few yellows, BUT sadly, not all escape the wrath of the wall when it calls ... The final race is won by a popular USA visiting driver Bill Rose in a Cool machine, returning home next Monday. I wonder how many autographs he's written on a football? ... Prizegiving .... Would have been a 'near pefect' evening to finish a near perfect week of southern speedway, IF I hadn't got lost finding my way home!!!!!!!!!!!!Heading back to Tauranga in a few hours, the car to get ready for the Saloon BOP Champs at Rotorua this Saturday. Get back to the right side of the fence! Ruapuna and Woodford Glen, two excellent speedway facilities seemingly well run, AND within 30 minutes of each other .. MMMMMmmmmmm

Has there ever been a more impressive tow-rig in speedway than Ian Easton's? Man, that thing is huge!

Murray thats pretty cool and great to see Jason "Skinny" Scott get second well done after blowing his motor at New Years Meeting here.
Looks like Priceys crash was bad had a report from track last night that he is ok. Just goes to show how safe these cars are.

Hey Murray that's not ex all black/crusader Todd Blackadder waiting for the rugby ball to be signed Definitely not our Toddster but the big guy loves his speedway. Had a couple of drives here in recent seasons -- in a streety and in Brett Nicholls' 48N superstock. I swear there was no connection between Toddy running it on the rev limiter and the Toymota blowing up the very next time Brett started it up :-)

You don't appreciate the size of Easton's rig until you see how many pit spaces it occupies at Palmy.

That's a great post Murray.
Fantastic pics.
It brought back a lot of memories from my time there in the 80's.

Looks like Priceys crash was bad had a report from track last night that he is ok. Just goes to show how safe these cars are. Regards Phil Pricey's - just Pricey.....he seems to bounce back from anything (well thats what Ive noticed in the short time I've seen him running anyway) The crash itself looked pretty nasty (and spectacular) looked like from where I was sitting in the town bend that he rode a wheel about half way down the backstraight and from there on in was "in for the ride" the car cart-wheeling at speed down the straight until the innevitable wall forced it to stop suddenly..... Guessing there will be a working bee on at edge today and tomorrow? Murray Guy - why oh why didnt you let us know you were gonna be there......might have been able to wrangle you a drive in a modifiedsprint for the night! ;D (I assume thats what you are calling baby sprintcars!?) Sdemon P.S. - Murray you should have been $12 worse off- plus any expenses (hot dogs, drinks etc) once you got into the complex, great move by the promoters to drop the gate price for a mid-week deal!

Great post, its rather pleasing to hear some positives about a complex and running of a meeting. Hopefully Pricey gets his car back together before Saturday

have to agree with Murray, this was our first visit to ruapuna and after 3 nights of Super Saloons it was a refreshing change to see some open wheel racing before returning home to Tauranga.
Ruapuna provided some entertaining racing and a well run promotion For $12 this was good value and add this to the $13 for the Super saloon hoopla @ woodford glen made two nights of racing quite affordable.
