Waikaraka Park,
Well it was the Super Saloon series at Waikarka Park, with saloons on the undercard and no Huntly meeting on we made the short trip up the southern motorway to Waikaraka Park,
With 3 local supers, and a big field of saloons the promotion decided to run a saloon teams event and invited me to be apart of it, so with the supers of 6A, 7A and 8a joined by 46a Nigel Ross’s Monza, , 48a Phil Twogoods super fast Corvette, 59a Corvette of Bryan Skelton, the awesome looking 74a K Mac Corvette of Scott Lansdowne. I was in a fast group of guys that new the track well, after agreeing to go up I thought I may have bitten off more than I can chew.
During the week after fixing the damage from, Kihikihi and Huntly we had made a mistake with a mount on the chassis, and we could not get the right hand front wheel set up right, but we made do with what we had, I took a practice run off the first saloon race to make sure I could control the car and not take out anyone else,
With Phil being made a super for the night the teams were chosen and I we got picked together, and got given the green team status, (kinda of fitting really)
the format was 3 groups of 2 4 lap races with rotating girds, meaning good quick fire action, with the car not turning in as well as normal I struggled all night, finishing in the back 3 most races, but we got better all night, and learned a lot about set up and other settings trying to sort out the car, the best race I had was the last one were I managed to stick to the outside of Nigel Ross for a lap and a half, but then got shuffled back, With Phil blowing a tyre off in the first heat we were way out of the points the team of 6a Doug Torrey and 74a Scott Lansdowne were easy winners, and were the class of the field all night, I was happy not finish all 3 races with out incident, I was outclassed all night by the guys around me I learnt a lot and hope to not be shown up like this again next time.
They ran a all in saloon feature and I had a good long battle with Rossco in the 77k, and Peter in the 23a, with multiple passing, and very little contact, every saloon and super saloon race all night ran with out a yellow, a pretty good effort seeing we race pretty wide cars on a pretty narrow racetrack,
Congrats go to the 1NZ Shayne McIntyre and 7m Brent Emerson for the awesome Super Saloon Feature, and it is really awesome of seeing the South island cars up here I wish everyone luck for the rest of the series,
Next week I race at Huntly on Saturday night, but not after I get a chance to see things from the other side of the officialdom as I am the senior steward at the Auckland Motocross champs both Saturday and Sunday, if you want to see some different sort of motorsport with a cheap $10 entry, come by Harrisville on Sunday, more details on www.pukemx.com
