The new Baypark opened on Labour Weekend in Oct 2001 and this weekend has been it's opening date since that time. Recent years Labour Weekend has been threatened by Rugby with the potential home semi-final / final for the Bay Steamers. The uncertainty of when the rugby will finish with Baypark has also affected practice days prior to opening, with only one practice being held in recent years. The 2009/10 speedway season Opening at Baypark will likely be put off until November with an Air NZ Cup game confirmed at Baypark on Sunday, October 25th. "... Taranaki are the final confirmed visitor to Baypark during the regular season, on Sunday, October 25." www.bayofplentytimes.co.nz/localsport/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3795009&thesection=localsport&thesubsection=&thesecondsubsection=

I am a big speedway fan but agree with BOP.
If the steamers are up to the task then that stadium will be alot fuller than the opening of BP speedway.
Another week or two won't mater and free's me up to attend one of the other labour weekend shows that I normally miss. Meanee here we come!

I have to wonder who was it that come up with the name 'Steamers' for the BOP top team. From what I can gather a steamer is something my dog leaves on the neighbours lawn.

The dog probably leaves it on your lawn brendanlucas. Think you'll find the name was linked to Rotorua geysers mudpools etc. At the time most of BOP games were held at Rotorua Stadium. What name would you like to change it to?

I should have known I would have angered some of the 'PC' gods. I geuss not everyone has the same level of humour...., or any. I'll stick with my day job. Go Manawatu, likely semi playoff material this year!

Been quite a few 'steamers' around Baypark! Hadn't made the link to the geothermal activity. Thanks Tiroto.

Go for the Steamers! Last year they didn't race Labour weekend because they weren't ready. I had to turn up at the stadium only to find it closed with a sign on the gate.
