the proposed round of the world solo bike champs here in nz?? was that the one that was possibly going to be staged at the cake tin in wellington?? it would be awesome to see some "real" international riders do there thing. i assume this event never happened?? any chance of it ever happning?? I found this ...Next year’s Speedway Grand Prix Series (SGP) will see the individual speedway world championship competed over eleven rounds, one Grand Prix more than 2002, with the additional event taking place at Westpac Trust Stadium, Wellington, New Zealand. (This event will be confirmed before the end of October)....
...Wellington fits in with the strategy to grow the Series outside the traditional European season. New Zealand has produced many household names in the past including Ronnie Moore, Barry Briggs and six times World Champion Ivan Mauger. Bringing world class speedway back to New Zealand will re-ignite the country’s passion for the sport. ...
... Compared with the already great series of events in 2002, a further event should be introduced next year in an important overseas country, New Zealand, which gave so many great Champions to this sport. And there will also be a move to a bigger stadium in Denmark, one of the most important countries in speedway. I am delighted with the progress already achieved, and there is no doubt that these improvements will continue in the future. www.masarna.nu/arkiv.cgi?id=625World Speedway - Provisional 2003 CalendarMay 17th - Poland, Pologne TBA May 31 - Sweden, Stockholm June 14 - GB, Cardiff June 28 - Denmark, Copenhagen July 12 - Slovenia, Krsko August 23 - Sweden, Gothenburg September 6 - Czech Republic, Prague September 20 - Poland, Pologne, TBA October 4 - Norway, Hamar November 1 - New Zealand, Wellington (TBC)November 8 - Australia, Sydney ANSWERThe World Speedway Champs are still under discussion though the 2003 event will not be coming to NZ because of issues arising with the Rugby World Cup taking place in Australia at the same time. We are still keen to host this event and are in negotiation with the promoters. www.gw.govt.nz/council-reports/pdfs/reportdocs/2003_34_2_Attach.pdfThe World Speedway Champs is another event which we believe could be very successfully held at the Stadium. This event has been delayed a year as the promoters cannot get venues in Australia due to the Rugby World Cup and the New Zealand event is only cost effective if held as part of an Australasian tour. www.gw.govt.nz/council-reports/pdfs/reportdocs/2003_293_2_Attach.pdf

cripes i did not realise that it was that long ago!! a while ago ivan mauger was on tv and he stated it was one of his ambitions to get nz and the solos back onto the world stage. seeing as the last attempt was now 6 years ago one might doubt if it will ever be pulled off. guess we will just have to suffice with watching it on tele, its just not quite the same without atmosphere thou is it.

It was cost prohibitive to stage
The Australian round was a once off because they simply didn't attract enough people. I flew over to Australia for the round and am glad I did, probably my only chance to see those guys in action. Crowd was probably around 15 - 20,000.
There was talk of $1 million NZD to build a temporary track up to international standard before any other costs came into consideration.
Based on a $10,000 person crowd (ambitiously high for a solo event in NZ without a genuine NZ contender) thats $100 per person just for the track!
So without someone bankrolling the event it ain't gonna happen.

Comparing apples with oranges ....Wellington Phoenix Football Club has confirmed it had secured a $NZ2 million ($A1.7 million) deal to bring David Beckham's American club the LA Galaxy to play in Wellington. ...
... A council media release said it expected a $NZ20 return on each dollar invested. It said a full Westpac Stadium usually meant $NZ6 million in new spending for the city. The council would not confirm if those figures indicated it was investing $NZ300,000.news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=296954ORAuthor, television celebrity and cultural icon Clive James criticized the Wellington City Council for spending public money bringing a broken down, injured football player, David Beckham, to Wellington. ...
... The Beckham visit has cost $2 million, of which an undisclosed amount has been advanced by the Wellington City Council's special events fund, although the mayor, Kerry Prendergast, has refused to reveal how much public money is involved. Local candidates, including mayoral candidate Jack Ruben, have severely criticised the expenditure of public money events without consultation and said it was typical of the high handed manner in which the Wellington City Council has operated.www.scoop.co.nz/stories/CU0709/S00260.htmAND FOR ...Ticket prices for adult non-Phoenix members start at $82.50 for silver seating, up to $100 for a gold section seat.www.nzsoccer.com/plugins/newsfeed.cgi?rm=content&plugin_data_id=20863

there is no doubt that the cake tin would have been a awesome venue for such a event, however palmerston north would be a great venue too and there would be no track set up costs involved. instant 1 mill saved. i would have thought the worlds best solo riders would have easily attracted a capacity crowd, more so in nz with our history.

PN would be a good venue but I dont think the stockcar drivers would like to lose the surface they have now. Solos run on a loose cinders type surface. Be a once in a lifetime event to see. Lunchbox

Speedway GP puts there own tracks in no matter where in the world it is held. I've been to 5 of them Bydgoszc,Wroclaw,Lodz,Cardiff and Prague. 3 of those are permanent speedways and Olly Olsen still changes them the day before the meeting to his own surface.
