Well macgorians, as some of you may know I am building a AU Std stock car engine to help fund my superstock this season. I only started pulling it apart today so the photos arnt that spectacular but its the start. Observer said it would be good to have a thread with the build photos in so well here is it....... Engine is a AU Falcon, upgrades im going to be doing to it are: Machine the head Machine the bolck face Hoan the block Lumpy cam Shiming the valve springs Lightning the flywheel putting ACL Race bearings in Chrome molly piston rings brand new seal kit all around Reconditioning the oil and water pump Plus a few other bits I have probaly forgotten

HI Jordy - I must admit I thought it would be a great thread to follow through in the Tech Board - hopefully even get a moderator to pin it too the top like the Holden v6 thread. that way we have the two must common motors with a pretty comprehensive how to thread.
cheers

When you put the lumpy cam in you'l have to check for coil bind std springs don't cut it becaause of the beehive design. Kiwi Cams do a kit to change the valve springs to a better setup that handles the higher lift they involve a lot of work have to machine spring seat an reset all the installed heights an reset tip heights for hyd lifters. You must check valve to piston clearance also an will have to cc the head an piston to work out the comp ratio , to determine how much to come of block an head. get rid of hyd timing chain adjuster an put in a threaded rod to manual adjust with lock nuts. You'll want a vernier gear for accurate timing on cam and get some shims laserd out for the lifter preload. Alot of work when you know what your doing, You'd be better of doing a el head up bolt onto rebuilt au bottom end. Thanks my 2 cents anyway pm me if got any questions Brent 22s

I take it the EL Head will take a lumpy cam that wont need the hard work listed above?

wow thanks brent haha, i knew there was a bit of work but not that much!!
Is it easier if I use a EL Head with the lumpy cam? as this engine isnt going to be a 1nz engine, its just going to be a fun learning experence for me and i dont hink ill have the knowledge, tools and paitence for the other bits you mentioned lol.
im having HUGE trouble getting the head bolts off, they wont budge!! ive tried every trick i know. any sujestions?

get a 1 metre length of pipe and get someone to hold the strong arm bar in place lol if your going to replace the head anyway you could always freeze it with nitrogen spray to shrink the bolts

110db all worth it, yeah long bar an get someone to hold engine only way to get bolts undone. You will also need to replace these bolts because they're a torque to yeild bolt only ment to be used once after they've stretched. el best way to go get set of springs from snow at kiwicams an vernier gear and cam bolt in as std.You still have to set up hyd lifters an shims though an dial in the cam.
Observer i got a new project under way watch for me this season. How'd ya m8 get on with the toplink mounting think i gave him 1 wrong measurement pm me.

Why do you need to those hydraulic lifters tozzy - to make the 560 lift work??? ;D bad joke i know Hope you havn;t sold the old car, too much of a beast that one. And PM sent

ok people time for an update (pics to come)
Engine is fully striped and hoping to get machined this week.
All the parts im ordering should be here end of this week maybe next week if all goes to plan. Now that I have moved houses to a place with no garage it may take a bit longer to get done but hey, ill keep yous updated.
All the internals in the engine were find so no need to replce pistons etc, still trying to sus out the lumpy cam bizzo! went and asked Kerry Lindsay for some advice but he wasnt that helpfull....

Bit of blame from the parts supplier Had hoped to have everything to Jordy by yesterday but a freighting glitch has meant they may not get to Wellington till Monday. Sorry Jordy, will get them there asap. Thanks for being so easy to deal with. Is the 4th Ford kit in the last fortnight and caught me out a little. (At least we know the parts are gonna be clean as.

sorry for lack of updates guys,
as godfather said, I am waiting on parts (dont worry that there not here yet mate haha its not a biggy) but also im still waiting for the machining to be done, Have been told by the tutor at tec to bring them in and see the "guy" who will do it. Have been doing that but hes always been busy so HOPEFULLY after seeing him today it will be getting done tomorow or early next week.
Other than that,, all pistons are out, I have a bare block and head. Have started to clean the carbon off the valves and pistons, flushed/cleaned the oil gallerys and checked for any damage which there was none. I will get some pictures up tomorow when I go to the grandparents to tidy up the mess I have made haha.

Bit of a well overdue update,
Head has been machined, Block is getting machined tomorow (18th September). So will be picking them up next Wed once im back from down south, So once i have it back I can take more pics and post them up and start the rebuild.
Just need to order a couple more parts from "The Godfather" lol. So hope to by the end of next weekend have it 90% together, if not all together.
Cheers Jordy

Ok guys well I had a day off today from course so since I had the engine back I got stuck into the engine, and here is what it started looking like (see the nice machine finnish on the head and block? haha) where im up to now is the engine is upside down on the stand and the crank shaft is in with the ACL racer bearings fitted. I just need to find the tourque settings for the housing blots on them then I can finnish of the block . Will be doing more tomorow so keep an eye out for some more pics. Cheers Jordy

Well another update,
Last week I took the head and cam to CSL to get the lumpy cam done and the valve seats sorted out, soo the head is nearly all finnished ;D Also while I have had a bit of time off I have been able to sort the block out, the pistons are in and the bottom end is all done bar torquing it all up (if anyone has a torque wrench I could borrow please let me know) and once thats done, on goes the sump and the timing chain cover etc then off goes the block to CSL for Brendan to time it all up etc for me then just need to put the waterpump etc on and shes done!!
So not long now untill she will be all complete ;D anyone want to buy it?

Hey obby,
sorry no pics of the head going together purely because (this will anser your 2nd question) the whole engine is now as CSL Cams in palmy getting the valve seating done, piston notching, cam grinded and timing all done. (whole thing getting put together ready to rumble really) as I feel its safer for the engine having CSL time it all up, then once thats done it will be dynoed and videoed to put on here for everyone to see and be complete ;D
so not too long now I hope
