There were similar posts for saloons and superstocks where people believed a national series was the way forward with some classes in line with all major motorsport classes in the world where a champion is decided over a season not 2 nights. I understand this is not possible with speedway in its current form so here is my idea. Over the last few seasons the nz stockcar champs have become a bit of a lottery with around 180 entries or so. If the nz champs were run late in the season points could be accumulated throughout the year at local club championships and other major championships whereby the top 80-100 cars gain entry into the nz champs. This would encourage travelling to nearby tracks, top drivers would get a better crack at the nz title by eliminating some of the luck required just to qualify and SNZ would still have there NZ title as the premiere event in the class. Three birds with one stone. Will be interested to see what other people think

Interesting points raised there.... BUT I kindda like it the way it is. I think the winners were well deserved and to be quite honest I'm not so sure we would have seen a diffrent winner. I like the idea of 160 - 180 stockcars turning up for a weekend of racing and I would hate to see that change really.
Just a question how many of the top 30 of last season do you think shouldn't have made it thru?
I'm not trying to poo -poo your idea but the idea of a festival of stockcar racing tickles me right where I like it.

I agree with you on the superstock and stockcar classes you can add to that that streetstocks as these are contact classes. But I think with the open wheel classes ( sprintcars, mods, supersaloons, saloons, midgets, tq's and minisprints) they should run it over 3 rounds ( 3 tracks 2 in the north 1 in the south then swap the following season 2 in the south 1 in the north) this will give you 9 races and drop your worst heat, so 8 races count that way I beleave you will get a true champion (not say the guy's gal's that have won in the past didn't deserve to win) I have seen to many times the top drivers taken out by other people, crashes etc that they didn't cause and got court up in. I think to make this work I would put an entry fee of $500 which you get back at the last meeting to make sure they turn up to all 3 meetings. Now this may sound steep but when you conceder that most cars are $30 000 to $100 000 +, $500 isn't that much. I would however give a refund if you have a good reason not to go to all the rounds I:E engine fail, car wreaked (not repairable in time or at all) and so on.

All good points really. Just a thought. In reply to ramjam i agree that the winners have all been thouroughly deserving and from a spectators point of view it is probably one of my favourite weekends of the season. But it just must be frustrating for a driver to travel hours and hours and be put out of qualifying by something as little as a flat tire, but i guess that is stockcars.

True, but even if you made it to the top 80 and ended up at the NZ champs... A puncture in any 1 race on night 1 would still more than likely put you in the bottom 50. As far as I can see the only reason to go to pre qualifying is if numbers are consistently over 180 (6 groups of 30) and then it would be for a purely logistical POV.

there is one major floor in your plan. here in the southisland you can only race (if your lucky) once every weekend. and at a massive traveling cost. with the northisland there is a chance that you can race 2 if not 3 times in a weekend. with more tracks working together to get numbers up the northislands have a massive advantage. and its not as if the worlds most expencive peice of water is free to get across.
I like what we have now.
