Well, my second meeting of the season and I was impressed!
The superstocks may have been light on numbers but the Marx brothers (x3) certainly kept their 6 lap races entertaining! Kudos to the WP team for making their races 6 laps - just enough time to keep it interesting with the 6 cars! Although Gary Ellis barely completed a lap a race, poor guy!
Ministocks were actually entertaining! Contact galore (no doubt the referees and SNZ aged a few years last night) but it does make them more interesting and some of the competition between these guys is excellent to watch.
Saloons: Too many, what was going on? 21 on the same track? Ever entertaining but I don't get why we have to race two races (supers and saloons) at the same time. Yes there may have only been 5 supers and 16 saloons but I've seen them combine the classes before: eg 5 supers and the 6 fastest saloons and then let the other saloons have their own race.
From a spectator's point, they were entertaining but there was just too many. I can't see a driver having a great time out there - or am I wrong? I did only get to see one race as the other started early and the last was cancelled due to time constraints so I stand to be corrected?
Modifieds: Very classy field, 4 visitors from Stratford and Foxy made for some classy racing. I can only handle about 12 of them while I'm sitting on Cemetry bend and 13 was a good number - the first two races were really good with cars having to weave through the pack and actually race, as were the 2 lap face offs. But by the time the 25 lap feature came around, after a quarter of a lap it was a foregone conclusion that Foxx would win it and the only battle would be for third, which didn't even start happening until about lap 20. Not even 2 yellows did anything to stop Foxx and while the guy obviously deserved it, and is a nice guy to boot, I felt it was rather procession like to watch.
Streetstocks: Did anyone else feel so good watching these guys? I haven't seen a big field since god knows when at WP, even though the SI can pull them and the quality of racing was unbelievable! Hard, fast, spins and rollovers were all order of the day and I was cheering more than I usually do, they certainly got me going! Poor old Ben Donaldson, a first and a second and then half a lap down in the feature and he's out! Really good racing from them all though!
Highlights:
Streetstocks - my favourite, need I say more?
The Derby was classic as ever!
The speed of the races - one field on, next on and go, barely any waiting.
General quality of the fields over all.
Niggles/Qualms
Commentary - I do miss Aaron Drever! These guys just don't hit the mark for me, all respect to them. Although there were some classic moments!
"What's going on, must be a panel on the track" - streetstock feature. No bro, the car just rolled over.
"Our next big modified meeting is the 27th of Jan, dirt cup!" Hmmmm, muist be missing the North Island championships on the 19th December!
Ministock race 2 "Oh, here he comes, about to overtake the leader, yes he does, this is classic, why is he slowing down? Mechanical issues probably." - No, the race is over!
During the modified face offs "Foxx is now about to take on John Jackson, the 1NZ car, this will be a cracker - wait, no he's not, he's going in - not sure what's going on there" - that's because 1NZ was in 5th position and had already raced and lost his faceoff, Foxx was first.
Sorry, I'm sure they're nice guys but I couldn't resist.
The finishing time - we're on time constraints, do we have to do a three wide parade and a big presentation for the modifieds?
Saloon Shootout: The saloons can go as fast as they want, lets water the track so they can't drive on it!
Overall an 8/10 just because I love the streetstocks, I won't even go into the sidecars/Solos, I'll just dock a point from the meeting.
HUGE THANKS to Dion (auckstreetstocks1) for his regular updates on the entry list and I will be back again for this event next year!
