Saw this article in the Herald Thursday Morning which could spell the end of the Springs. www.nzherald.co.nz/cricket/news/article.cfm?c_id=29&objectid=10615943Read the whole article in particular the bottom quarter. Is this part of the reason why Manukau City Council is trying to build a motorsport park by the airport now with the Supercity coming into affect soon?

The bit about the springs is scary sh-t,while it only appears to be on some pull through's dream list if it attracts enough attention it may gather support,be interested to know how Springs contract is worded, and what safeguards there are against this sort of thing!!

Not the first time cricket has been mentioned with regards to Western Springs Stadium and I'm sure it wont be the last.
I'm not sure what the fascination is. The terraces would roast fans alive during a hot day of test match cricket.
The ground also has no established cricket pitch.
I can't image the residents being too impressed in dealing with drunken cricket fans after a hot day in the sun.
The article mentions two major impediments. One being finding $20 million to redevelop the place (possibly removing the existing terraces and forming a grass embankment?) and #2 assuming Western Springs Speedway agreed to move which I will suggest is unlikely unless the council builds us a new $50 million dollar state of the art 1/3rd mile banked facility somewhere in Auckland!
I don't think we need to push the panic button just yet, the article merely throws some ideas out there. Cornwall Park and Coli Maiden Park have also been mentioned as possible venues in past times.

Snap Bill, have to agree with Percy too (crashed off my bike the other day and obviously took a stronger blow to the head than I thought).
Remember going to a Willie Watson benefit cricket match at the Springs a few years ago now. They laid an artificial pitch in the middle and the boudaries square were ridiculously short, there is no way they would ever be approved as an acceptable size for any form of international cricket let alone tests.

That was my first thought, that the boundaries would be way too small. Not that actually care about Cricket!

The recomendations from the council comissioned report on Western Springs Stadium a few years ago looked favourably at events being held up to 6pm with some night activity. When I read it my conclusion was the report was talking about cricket not speedway. The cynic in me says speedway is still there because of the locals opposition to night events. If they stopped night events entirely now it would be hard to restart any sort of night event there at a later date.
