Finalists have mostly been decided for the North Island Sidecar Champs after a blustery night’s qualifying at the Robertson Holden International Speedway. Racing was slick and quick for the main events, with only one Minisprint heat suffering any delays, and all other qualifying heats running smoothly.
AFC Motorcycles NI Sidecar Champs A smaller than expected field of 21 Sidecars meant that only 5 bikes would be eliminated after Friday’s racing. Each duo had three qualifying races in which to stake their claim, and two combination in particular stood out as particularly impressive. 97p Mike Zachan & Paul Humphrey won all three of their heats, as did 19v John Hannon and current 1nz swinger Kervin Demanser; the latter being a late call-up due to injury to regular 19v swinger Tony Hirini.2nzk Russell Stuart & Andrew Parker were also on the money, registering two wins and a second place, as were 3nzp Derek Ramsay & Tony Hislop with a win and two second placings. Also with a win and two second’s were 34v John Pitt & Jason Wallis and the much improved 11p Mark Whyte & Gordon Campbell.The sole Australian entrants, 33aus Robert Wilson & Cameron Bell, improved as they learned the surface, culminating in an exciting victory by virtue of an outside passing maneuver on 3nzp Ramsay & Hislop. Other heat winners to qualify were 61g Sefton Truuts & Calvin Fogarty, 39p Andrew Buchanan & Philippa Burns and 59g Stu Priest & Mike Bond. Tonight’s racing will begin with a three way run-off to decide the final qualifier for the NI Sidecars.
