Yes, that name rings a bell with me as well Tim - but I don't know anything else about him? There were a few A9X's at Wellington in the early 80's, Murray Tinsley's immaculate one in particular (then went to Todd Moffat/Pitcher/Grey/Flynn), plus the one that Bill Moffat had (then Reid/Halcrow), but I don't remember this one being here for long - just a season maybe? Afternoon 13W Thats definitely Pauls Car I had a lot to do with him when he lived in PN... He had a farm out from Shannon...Moved to PN ..got into Real Estate....Then sold up & shifted to Tauranga somewhere Cheers Wiseowl

I recall the previous owner of the Quin car having the same colours, but # 7 & Abel Autos sponsored. Very smooth car & ahead of its time. Given the interest, here are another for someone else to put a name to. Thanks, BL

Cheers, BL Yep, Wayne Webby's SLR5000 and Murray Tinsley's A9X - don't remember it being that colour scheme - but it obviously was! Note on Wayne Webby's Torana the central driving position - he seemed to have the theory this was better - even had it on his Corvette that he raced about 10 years ago - weirdest looking thing ever - way tall and skinny, sort of like a full bodied Modified! Anyone got any pictures of that?

So are there any pictures of the Paul Hoggard 7W Abel Auto's A9X - that was such a hot looking car when it first appeared!

Keith MacArthur was the first to build and run a hatch back torana in Wellington, if i recall he went to Aussie for a holiday and imported a steel body shell from there.

Any pictures of that, I don't remember it - where did it go to after K Mac had it? My 13W is his last Saloon car, the Monza he started building but never raced in the mid 80's, think he went to Australia permanently after that? Phil Nelson had it finished as a Super (injected 355, mid mount Powerglide, open tube Commercial), but it never went very well, then Darren Easton had it for half a season after it had been laid up for years. I swapped my Sierra for it in 1993 and HRC turned it into a Corvette Ltd Saloon. Still pretty original now of course.... I think there is about 4 feet of chassis rail and some of the side plate that was originally built by Keith Macarthur!

I crewed for K Mac for a season when he was racing the torana. One Friday night we decided [after a few beers as you do] to build a rear wing for the car. It looked real good, didn't help the car to handle any better. It was baned by SNZ after complaints from other drivers, thinking it was giving Mac advantages over them.It just looked the part, something different way back then,i think the car went to the Bay

I worked out the Roll centre on the Monza was around the middle of the engine block... so funnily enough it had no roll and just sledged the front in the corners...

Ian Taylor 73/74 There were about 15 saloons at this meeting[as far as i can remember],they came from Wellington, Meeanee and Stratford, cant recall if any came from Palmerston. The Pearce brothers from Stratford had a Falcon,a guy by the name of Steve Jacobs from Meeanee drove a XU1 Torana[ he was Queenlands saloon champ] both very quick cars. There were a lot of quick cars there[at the time].someone may be able to add a few more names. Unfortunately We were the first to hit Taylor's new car,he wasn't very impressed as this was the first time the car had been raced great weekend. The crowd loved the racing, now I'm showing my age

Chris13W - I always thought the car of Phil Nelsons was originally built by John Cooley (now of Cool Sprintcar fame), when he lived down the road from Mac.
I remember in the days when it was allowed, spending a couple of practice evenings up at the track during the week with Phil trying to help him get the thing to handle. Car seemed to think it was better suited to drag racing as it had a major dislike of corners.
Pretty sure K-Mac still lives in tauranga.

That's possible, I'm only going by what I've been told about the car in the past - but it is getting on for 30 years ago so anything is possible! Yep, like I said, had a front roll centre that probably coincided with the centre of gravity... so no roll moment = quick in a straight line, but not going around corners... Of course plenty will say its still the same, but I'm sure its way better now than when it was built!!! And the K-Mac in Tauranga is Shayne MaCintyres brother, so quite a different person. Also used to be a K-Mac brand of springs and Sway bars from Australia, so think its a pretty common name! If anyone has any pictures of the car when Phil Nelson had it I'd be keen to see them??

Chris - yes with all these Mac's and K-Macs in Tauranga its a bit confusing, however being an Wellington old fart I was referring to the original Keith MacArthur in the thread, whos engineering shop in Upper Hutt was K-Mac Engineering. He and family shifted to Tauranga many years ago and I believe are still there.
Totally seperate from the current K-Mac chassis business of Tauranga.

I recall Steve Jacobs from the early '70's at Meeanee he ran an insanely quick yellow EH Holden, before the Torana, Frank Pierce ran the Falcon.
