Sincere sympathy to Dave's family.
One of the good guys in the Christchurch speedway scene.
When I first started my announcing at Ruapuna back in about '82 Dave was one of the most encouraging blokes in the pits.
And what a character !!!
We'll miss him.

Dave had a certain aura about him. I grew up watching him race, but didn't really meet him until my dad (of whom he knew very well) dragged me into DC Autospares in Hornby when I was about 10. I was amazed at how he treated me like just another one of the guys, despite the fact I was still just a little kid. Later on, I was fortunate to have some dealings with Dave within the automotive parts industry, buying up some of his stock when he finally closed the doors. This past season as modified Sprint rep, I had the pleasure of dealing with Dave again in his new role as an SNZ referee at Ruapuna, and it was good to be dealing with him again, although we didn't really have the time to talk about Speedway.
Dave did a lot for Speedway down here, and if it weren't for him, us openwheel fans in CHCH quite possibly couldn't have had venue to watch our chosen facet of the sport. The cruel irony of Dave's illness is that he was diagnosed about the same time my Dad was diagnosed with cancer. Dad's still going strong, but now his mate has gone.
Godspeed Dave. Open wheel racing will be all the poorer with out you

Got to meet Dave very early in my Speedway career when I was crewing on the VW Saloon 31 n of Terry Fletcher. Terry and Dave were great mates and all due really that they both ran 2180cc VW engines. Many great nights of fun and learning with Dave and family. My Stockcar wing was what was left of the wing he ran on his Midget one night to prove a point. They banned it of course but Dave had the time of his life sneaking out and getting some laps in before they black flagged him. A true blokes bloke, hard but fair. Another good one gone!!! Thinking of Dave and his family at this very sad time. God Speed Mate!!! Pete and Karen Muckle Nelson
