HI Everyone, This is a tech question on a car that was MIA but was tracked down. It has been raced recently, but the owner now wants to do something that I think is pretty darn cool – restore this beast to its former glory Essentially, they want to take this car from this back to this – as good as the first day it rolled out on the track. Obviously over the years the car has had a number of changes, and the crew are keen to rectify that. We need some of those ledgends of these boards who have been around the block to scan the memory banks and help with some details –basically anything you can think of on this car. What sort of engine did it have – what was the carb, inlet manifold etc? How did the pipes work? What sort of tyres? What sort of diff? What sort of steering? Etc etc etc. These guys want to be as true to the era as possible, and any info will be appreciated! And as usual, any close up pictures of the car appreciated, as sometimes that can help!

Steering: Falcon manual steering box mounted down the RH side of the engine bay and chain driven 2:1 across the dash area.
Diff: Did experiment with a Commercial pig diff but ended up with a J2 Morris van diff 4.3 :1 ratio from memory.
Exhaust: 3 into 1 + 3 into 1 then 2 into 1 down RH side on top of siderails. Have seen some pics with a set under the siderails but could have been when Fingers had it.
More to follow as memory kicks back in.
Good on these guys for doing this as too many pieces of Stocky history have been chopped up and biffed.

OUtstanding stuff Pete. Have been informed this picture below is from the first meeting of the car in 1981 - what a freakin hotrod. They don't make them like that anymore. And check out the detail - even has a peice of steel to protect the valve on the front tyre! I think you might still be able to buy all that performance stuff still, as well as a bunch of other cool stuff for 6 fans www.cliffordperformance.net/html_pages/news_pages/ford_facts/fordfacts.html

Bill Peat once told me that Dave had London Taxi gearboxes in his Tanks. Dont know weather its the case for this BEAST? Thought I should mention it incase it helps.
Will be great to see her put back to "original". Considering I was Born in the year that the Photo was taken. ;D

As far as the gearbox goes, Dave and crew were real keen on the old Falcon 3 speed and Top loaders. My ex Evans 15p had the Falcon deal in it and Im pretty sure this one wouldve followed suit. The reason I had some info on 6p was because I was trying to buy it back around 1986 or so as a roller and still had the letter written with the details in my scrapbook. Purchase price then as a roller was $2800-00 minus engine, gearbox and seat. What would it be worth now???

Great news, thankfully the message is finally getting out that we need to preserve these old cars when they come to the end of their racing days. Far too many have ended up at the scrap yard, some that didn't need a lot of work to restore.
I will find the photos I have and post them, maybe they will help a little bit. The last photo above is absolutely brilliant.

If you look carefully in the Robin Wildbore 31p pics you will see it has the Morris Commercial diff in it. 6.5:1 running 2nd gear on tallish tyres showed how much torque the Clifford had!! I know it looked great as 6p but Robin always kept it looking nice as 31p. PS:If my fuzzy memory doesn't let me down I reckon this old bus did some standard stock duties in Palmy around 94 or so or was that wishful thinking on my part from around then???

Is this the same car just with a Charade body? Still with Wildbore Then with Garry Trotter Possibly, but I don't think so. (We need the Palmy experts to really answer this). I think it could be this car that I am led to understand is another Dave Evans built car, built as a replacement for the Clifford 6 for Robin Wildbore. TimS or Carwrecker should know for sure.

Hi Everyone Thank you for all this infomation an photos (keep em coming). This will be the next off season project for me and my team so any and all facts are very welcome. The only person to annoy me so far with a fact I didnt even contemplate was Pete Muckle. He has informed me that the orignal body shell was all steel, that could be a problem, but I will cross that bridge later on. So thanx again Hads, Tim, Pall Mall and everyone, Yes Pete even you ;D Blaine

Early history of the car is as follows 1981/82 - 82/83 Dave Evans 6p 1983/84 - 84/85 Paul Whitcombe 15p 1985/86 - 87/88 Robin Wildbore 31p 1988/89 - 90/91 Garry Trotter 46p 1991/92 - ?95/96? Peter Trotter 47p The pic as 91p is Willie Lawrence and was taken at greensheeting in Sept 2003. From memory it went to Wellington after that... The white Robin Wildbore car was more of a copy of the Evans 501 car from around 1990, with a Ford Pop body to confuse us all......have no idea where that car went, but would be interested to know.

Re. the white 31p, I seem to remember Ron Tye pedalling a similar looking orange-coloured car complete with Pop body as 29p I think it was maybe 5 or so seasons back - was this the ex-Wildbore machine? Anyone got a pic handy? Great thread guys...

I seem to remember Uncle Ron having the ex Evans "Pom" car with the plate body which was part or the roll cage.Dave ran it with Hoosiers etc.So I think that car would be of a much later vinatge than these ones we are hunting info on. Could be wrong though?

Is the 97B car the original or the copy that ended up in KK and is now in the hands of Graeme Wood in Auckland?
Good to hear cars are being restored and not scrapped.

Could be wrong though? I think the "Pom" car built for Chris Elwell was pretty well covered here. The only thing we never got was a photo of when 99W Ron Tye had the car. macgor.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=stockcarmia&thread=4154&page=1
