HI All
Well, we got out there in the nick of time - in fact some would say we were early for a change, as we made it in the gate at 250pm for the 4 pm start, so not a bad start to the day.
The lads had done most of what needed to come down this time, so we only had to fit the seat, finish the wiring, mount the carb fire it up, worry about the ticking from a lifter in the new motor, then go home and hope that the noise was nothing. Thanks for the words of encouragement from Al Levien “they all do that mate, 4 v only stops ticking in time for the 3rd race”.
Had 3 races to try and run the motor in. Motor has some potential; ticking stopped as it warmed up just like you said Al, so that was a good start. Tried to stay off the pedal a bit, and we ran a tall RR to try and go easy on the new motor – well that was the plan. Not sure if I pulled full throttle yet, but she still buzzed the wheels pretty hard.
Set up was a little off due to the rush, but it was close enough to have some fun and hang it out by the wall. Led the second race from start to almost finish, spun in front of the pack on the last lap “choker” but got it back together for a 3rd. Had two other 2nds in the other races.
OAS team member Shane Olsen had the 41gm out there, and had an outstanding day in the x 1nz Rees car, which has also had a freshen up, and a rebuilt carb. I’ll let shano give us his perspective on that.
There were 6 other cars there, and all were fast. Expect more to come. Chris Baxter had the new chev 8 there, and despite being in the action most of the day, he still set the fastest lap in the race – well done mate, and good to finally meet you on Saturday.
Jason Smith had some bad luck blowing a plug out on the warm up laps, but he will be back and badder than ever.
Dwayne Honey was back into from the Green – dive bombed 2nd and 3rd in the first corner, and put himself up the wall. Put a few other hits on, and then came in 3rd in that race. The car is fast and strong again, just needs a little work on the reliability, had a couple of issues after the 2nd race that saw him sit the race out.
Kev Hayman had 14gm out there with a fresh carb on it, and that wee best was screaming its head off - the car is quick, and probably fastest through the turns in typical Nelson fashion. Kev had a few hits and a big wall ride after just missing a big dive bomb on Dwayne Honey, and also stoped in the last heat and waited for his other car he owns to block him – he’s a top man, and you couldn’t get the grin off his face.
That’s all for the first episode – another car was delivered to Greymouth on Sunday, and we expect another half a dozen cars at the next meeting as guys finish off their offseason jobs.
Thanks to craig B for his photos above, and good to meet you this weekend.
Thanks to the club and officials on the day, the meeting was 5 bucks entry for all because of the small fields, but it was fun, fast, and over after 2 hours. Glad I took the sunscreen as it was hot hot hot.
Next meeting in 2 weeks with any luck – better look at some flights, as this rusty driver needs the practice.
Look forward to shano and ollys version of the day’s events – and anyone else who might care to comment.
Cheers
Obby
p.s You'll have to excuse the get up of the car - we hope to have a paint job done by the next meeting and with any luck the tri rail might be there too.
p.p.s anyone got any tips on where to find some more chrome wheels?
