OAS RACING: Meeting 4
After a rain out at greenstone park on Saturday a last minute decision was made late on Sunday morning to head to Westport for their best pairs meeting. The sun was out and we had a great ride up the coast road (which has to be one of the most scenic drives you will get any where in the world) after Saturdays annoying drizzle there was no doubt we would get to turn some laps today.
Great for me but not so great for bad had who had come down from wellywood for the weekend (and missing the teams champs) only to get rained out and not enough time to get from Westport to chch on Sunday hence missing this meeting as well, but on a big positive he had a full day in the workshop on Saturday and 687gm is now looking a real picture. Will let the bad one tell you more on that subject.
Race 1:
We lined up with 7 cars including 84c from chch, I had drawn grid 2 for this race and knew my car went well on this track so was confident of a good result, From the green we got away well and was in the lead till shaneo in 41gm had other ideas of this flag chaser getting any more and turned me round mid turn 1 but in doing so sent himself into the dirt bank, I got going again and just tried to hang on to the back of smithy in 43gm who had the rover flying around the small Westport oval but didn’t get near him,Big positive for us was the motor was revving well and the problem oil seal held together.
Race 2:
Started with a reverse grid from finishing positions in race 1 had me off 6 we had a lot of bang and crash in this race as everyone went mad for field position on a wet track, Kev the haymanator
Got the best start and took off, I saw him on the warm up laps trying the high line to good effect but unfortunately this was to be his down fall on lap 2 when he went into turn 1 a little hot and wide and tried to climb the dirt bank thankfully the chassis slowed him down with his front wheels over the top (legend stuff kev)
From the restart it became clear Brent (dodgy) in the very quick 51gm had plans and I was one of them and we had a couple of good battles through out this race with one of the exchanges jarring my battery cable loose causing some good backfires and after spinning myself while trying to turn on brent finished down the order, a good race and had a lot of laughs afterwards, Jas crossed for the flag again leaving him on top for the best pairs 3rd and final race.
Race 3:
The pairs were made from accumulated points from the previous 2 races with top on points pairing with bottom on points and so on I finished 2nd on points, the pairs were shaneo 41 and smithy 43,Brent 51 and gill 21gm, kev the rev 14 and me, with dave hern getting the single spot.
Kev started off the front and got away while the rest of us set off after him, I cant really remember the whole race as their seemed to be action every where battling with both brent and gill and then coming upon the waiting shaneo managed to get past him the once but not so lucky the second time and in the wall we went jarring my terminal loose again, managed to finish with a lot of pops and bangs going on.
All in all we had a real good day and a big thanks to sunset speedway for hosting us, was great to be able to race up there again.
Cheers Olly
