Those with longer memories may remember him from the GB tour of NZ in 1974.
To say Stuart was a superstar of the sport is an understatement. He was a true sports personalty, bigger in some respects than the sport itself. In the 1970's and early 80's he was a household name. People who'd never seen stock car racing knew the name Stuart Smith.
He could add a couple of thousand on the gate, just by turning up. He was a larger then life character who was willing to play up to his super star tag.
A classic example is back in the late 70's. A grid of the top names was lined up to race. Stuart's car was driven on track by one of his mechanics and just left empty on the front row of the grid, but where was 'smiffy'? Down through the pits came Stuart's roller with a capped chauffer driving the personalised Rolls Royce (STU1). The car came on track drove round and parked up at the side of the grid. Out got the chauffer and opened the back door. Out got a rather leggy model and then Stuart, who was then handed his helmet and climbed in to his stocker and signalled to the promoter he was ready to go.
The 20,000 packed into Odsal were going mental booing or cheering. Classic Stuart, whose talent for the showmanship was only surpassed by his talent as a driver.
A terrible loss to the sport. He was the reason I fell in love with the sport.
