We have many events many novelty events that support the main racing. This year at baypark we've had demo derbys and a Caravan race. In the 80's at Napier there was the roly poly car that came out to see how many times it could roll over. There were ramp races where a ramp was on the track and the car had to go over it on each lap. I'm guessing it was about 25 years ago at the old baypark I saw (i think ) a tandam stockcar race. 2 stockcars chained together, one in front of the other. - I'm sure someone can clarify exactly what that was all about. I don't know the history of it, but i guess Stockcar teams racing may have started as a novelty sideshow. If so a great success with a recognised NZ Champs. Get your memory cap on - What other events have been tried - successful or otherwise - at speedway meets? If you have photos - even better Dave

I remember the rolly polly car at riverside when i was younger also in later years although havent seen one fro a few yerars a locomotion race which saw from memory (not flash) a streetstock chained to two derby cars with the rear car having a passenger. They were always good to watch. I also remember the odd caravan derby in Invercargill.

figure 8 racing how long ago was that. I saw a bit of that on an episode of Monster Garage. until then I thought it was a mythological race because of the inherient danger. Has anyone out there actually raced in one? or are all too damaged ;D dave

I raced in and won several Figure 8 races at Wanganui, Tokoroa and Rotorua around 1971 to 1974. If you didn't get your cross - over timing right it could be disastrous. Exciting racing.
In the USA they still race Figure 8's with the equivalent of our Super Saloons. We met a driver last year, who had just won a Figure 8 at an Indianapolis track. Hope to get to see a Figure 8 race this year in July with Willie Kaye's tour.

I won two figure 8 races in the states in 2004. I found them to be quite safe and spectacular. We ran 2 events in NZ and had no incidents just fun. I am keen to know more of the horrific injuries mentioned above. I was told they were banned as a driner had a Heart Attack after a race and not as a result of the race. This was told to me by a Stockcar legend.

I'm not sure how often but back in the old school days of Stratford they had stockcar soccer ,I think maybe late 80's early 90's.I think the soccer ball is still at the track rusting away maybe wrong though.
