John Hawkins passed away on the evening of 20th October 2011 after a long fight with cancer.
He was a man I had the pleasure of doing business with and he had the respect of many people in our sport of speedway plus the rest of the motorsport in nz as a whole.
I have been a regular reader of his column in the Press plus with his magazine "NZ Racer"
My thought are with the Hawkins family.
RIP John

Very sad to hear. John was one of the most respected writers of New Zealand speedway, and has been for a very long time. He will be sadly missed by many, especially, but not only, in the Canterbury region.
Condolances to all.

A very sad loss - to motorsport, to media and, obviously, to friends and family. His was a name associated with many forms of motorsport in his chosen field and one who took it upon himself to promote it at all levels. A great contribution to helping motorsport reach its place in New Zealand sport.
You'll be missed John and remembered well

Very sad to hear this, I raced slot cars against John many years ago. He was a real perfectionist with his cars. I have always enjoyed reading his writeups. He covered a huge range of motorsport and will be sadly missed. My thoughts are with his family.
